I am very interested in it, because it has a 12" that points UP toward the player. One of the reasons I bought my Hartke Kickback was for this reason. Now they're coming out with this and I wanted to see if anyone has bought one yet before I decide to. Thanks. 8 Mon, Oct 7, 9:10PM EST Thumpin Hey all again! Not many folks on this chat right now! Can anyone tell me who the bass player was on the Paul Simon hits "Loves Me Like a Rock" and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover"? What great playing. I heard it was either Tony Levin or Chuck Rainey. 9 Mon, Oct 7, 10:44PM EST AndrewT Hey Thumpin, the bass player on "Loves me Like a Rock" is David Hood. And Mr. Levin plays on "50 Ways". 10 Mon, Oct 7, 10:47PM EST AndrewT Can anyone out there recommend a good, small bass amp? Something good for small room gigs, about 60-Watts. I've been using a Roland Super Cube-60 for years, and love the tone I've got out of my fretless through it, but the amp is starting to go - starts to cut out when I have to push the volume enough to get over the drummer. Any good models that do justice to a fretless? 11 Tue, Oct 8, 1:29AM EST AzBug AndrewT: I've recommended Gens-Benz on his site before. Try them out before you buy! They have a great XLR LoZ DI Out that will help you play over the drummer when needed. Good luck! 12 Tue, Oct 8, 6:17PM EST JimJamb2277 Bassman...W.O,W.That was a wild Month of entries! Hood is one of those behind-the-scenes bassists who doesn't really have a spot in the limelight, yet the songs he played sure have. Same with Tony Levin. "Sledgehammer" may have been played to death on MTV, but you can't resist that cool, slinky, popping bass line, courtesy of Mr. Levin! Gotta give credit to the superb drummer on that track too, Manu Katche. 4 Tue, Oct 8, 9:14PM EST Luther Tony Levin also plays that great bass line on "Slip Slidin' Away". On the "behind the scenes" bass player thread, a buddy of mine was singing the praises of Lee Sklar the other day. I had almost forgotten how many great songs he's played on. I last saw him live with James Taylor in 1989 and he was great. He's a big fan of Carol Kaye...not to bring up the "archived chats" from the past (Jamerson vs. Kaye bass credits). If there's anyone here who listens to dub, the new Jah Wobble/Bill Laswell collaboration is first rate. It's called Radioaxiom and is just what you'd expect from either player. The production is also noteworthy. 5 Wed, Oct 9, 7:41AM EST crimins On the thread of great recordings with Lee Sklar on bass, check out Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" CD. 6 Wed, Oct 9, 12:59AM EST AzBug If you're into Katche' and Levin; Peter Gabriel's latest came out last week. He uses both guys again. Interesting stuff. As usual, it's lesson in music production. 7 Wed, Oct 9, 7:05PM EST Luther crimins...Spectrum is a great recording. In one of the projects I work with, we cover the title cut. Great stuff. AzBug..check out Martin Sexton's record "Wunderbar". Levin steals the show and plays some awesome melodic bass lines that remind me a bit of Graham Maybe's work with Joe Jackson. 8 Wed, Oct 9, 8:31PM EST JimJamb All,...I knew this site was great on my First visit over a yr. ago.My first bass was a Gibson EBO,W/Peavy TNT 100 combo,1978.As opposed to a Yamah 250 motor cross bike,I was 17.All Of the last post remind me of a few of the bassist that over the yrs have inspired me,and prove out what one of my mentors/trombonist (Teddy Adams)said not long after I joined his jazz quintet in 1983."If the gig only pays for three I'll use Voice,Horn,& Bass".Also..."If you'er not gigi'n Always Listen. To Everything you can"!Luther ..Sklar and his fellow side men cut an album under the name Slice.Thumpin...Levin ,An avid Photograhper, while on stage rigged a camera next to his foot pedals to document the settings so when listing to the play back he could recreate that sound.I'm arock fan who,By the grace of god was picked up early on by the local jazz musicians.Check out Greg Williams.com Later .Thanks ,James- Savannah Ga. 9 Wed, Oct 9, 8:35PM EST MoosBros Sklar.... I cannot afford a head for the big goliath yet. What should I do? (The 750 watt speaker has 8 ohms) 53 Tue, Oct 22, 6:13AM EST Bass Bitch MOOS BROS- yeah ef are a subject which you could discuss/argue for for years. But since playing with a cross-over band as a sub- I realised that abit of synth on bass- just as a mix to the clean signal- would be cool. But I am sick of carrying all those pedals around. A nice multipedal would go down a treat right now. :-) 54 Tue, Oct 22, 8:49AM EST MoosBros I thought you were using the SWR MoBass head the last time you were posting regularly,,, you're not the same BassBitch? 55 Tue, Oct 22, 8:49AM EST MoosBros btw,,, did anyone ever hear from LEVITE? 56 Tue, Oct 22, 4:04PM EST What is better than the ZOOM bass pedal for the money? ($99) 57 Tue, Oct 22, 4:44PM EST MoosBros Joe,,, I've used the Zoom acoustic guitar pedal,, and know of another guy who has the Zoom electric guitar pedal.... I tend to think most of their stuff is useless junk,, very noisy,,,not particularly musical sounding... I would suggest a SansAmp Bass Driver D/I if you don't already have one.Work on getting a great tone from your bass and amp,, THEN.... maybe try the Harmony Central Bass Message Boards,,, most of those guys seem to live and die by their effects...atleast,, , it seems they all use a bunch of em.....I'm more of a plug straight in/tone is in your fingers kind of guy.... 58 Tue, Oct 22, 4:47PM EST MoosBros you can use the Goliath just fine as an extension cabinet.. just be careful that you don't severely overdrive your amplifier(if it's a transistor amp)... that kind of distortion will smoke your speakers if you're not careful.... 59 Tue, Oct 22, 6:15PM EST old timer Levite....still MIA . Too bad , I've got a Pedulla MVP 5 with his name on it...Oh well ! 60 Tue, Oct 22, 9:21PM EST MoosBros a Pedulla 5 was the first nice ifve string I ever saw in person... 61 Tue, Oct 22, 11:21PM EST Luther OT...I thought it wasn't for sale?!!! Like Ozzy said....I'll be coming "over the mountain" when the status changes...same goes for the Series I!!!I'll see PABass next week. I've got lots of McNeil's Oatmeal Stout stocked up from my last trip your way, for his big 4-0. Vermont isn't good for much except maple syrup, cheap ski passes, leaf peeping tourists in October and McNeil's Brewery in Brattleboro. Every brew from McNeil's is like a sore dick...you just can't beat it!!! 62 Wed, Oct 23, 5:15AM EST Bass Bitch MOOS BROS- yeah it`s me. The MO`bass was stolen after a gig. But I won`t buy another- they are packed full of this and that- but the best tone is in the `normal`swr stuff I reckon. (It did look good though on stage in that flight box) 63 Wed, Oct 23, 5:18AM EST Bass Bitch LUTHER- is a sore dick a good thing? LOL 64 Wed, Oct 23, 10:03AM EST big g lowlifer>yes, same email addy. Joe>>although the general consensus is that if you want to use effects, individual effect boxes are better sounding than the all in one Zoom. For $99 you can't beat the zoom for bang for the buck, although I've found it not useful for stage it is fun to practice with and the tuner is accurate with my 5 string. I do use the slapback setting with our PA. Be sure to get an AC adapter as they eat up batteries. 65 Wed, Oct 23, 10:11AM EST button 66 Wed, Oct 23, 10:13AM EST BassLand Damn I keep forgetting to identify who I am on this board (Used to it being done automatically). That is a video clip of my band done at a Borders Book Store in Glendale 67 Wed, Oct 23, 11:42AM EST old timer Luther , you're thinking of the ThunderBass 5 , not for sale , the MVP 5 was the blueish-green one . They all look alike after a while.... and the Alembic...forget about it Guido ! 68 Wed, Oct 23, 11:43AM EST old timer BassLand...nice sound... 69 Wed, Oct 23, 1:33PM EST AzBug Bassland: SAH-Weet! Are you using a flange or chorus effect? Or, is it my MediaPlayer? The Tobias is sounding good! What Border's were you guys at? I used to play in a combo that played the 'Borders Circuit' out here, in Phoenix. I believe Borders just started popping up out there? I saw one for the first time when I was home a few months back. 70 Thu, Oct 24, 12:59AM EST PABass I had some problems with SWR heads, seems the 12AX7 tube (sp) can come loose and is mounted upside down, problems lies in that you cannot tell it is loose untile it craps out, I ended up with an Eden Wt800 that has been trouble free for 2+ years now, (fingers crossed) Bass Bitch, no....a sore dick is not a good thing!!! Just an expression of a good deal, lol. Mopars....I'll take a Viper any day of the week although I beleive a C-5 vette is the best bang for the buck.. Luther I had that Penta buzz awhile back you could've got cheap, when your down we'll take the Martin tour, those guitar sound hole cutouts make great coasters !! AZbug...Seems that Borders supports local music, bands in this area usually do some sort of scaled down acoustic set of musi in exchange for getting their disc in the stores, they hav a local band section at the store in Allentown, Pa. Cheers all!! 71 Thu, Oct 24, 6:25PM EST Bernie B in the PT Personally love Mopar, as I once had an old 'Cuda that turned over 5 times on the odometer w/only one engine rebuild. Lord knows how many Dodge Darts and Plymouth Valiants are still running around out there. I'm sure all of us have either owned one of those buckets 'o' bolts, or at least knew someone who has. Just got a new PT Cruiser--Great gig mobile for the price, and ten times hipper than a mini-van. I must admit that I too find SWR a tad mid-rangey, and plenty of people have bitched about the heads. Personally I think if they'd use a better grade AX-7 tube to begin with they wouldn't have that problem, and the tone would have more low end balls. Tubes I know, having been hooked on them in the past. Right now I am looking at combos again trying to decide between Roland, Polytone, or Acoustic Image (all solid state amps). Playing Upright and electric can really make you very picky about your sound, as the Upright demands a much flatter sound spectrum, but the electric needs a good pre amp to compensate for this. Have left the C&W circuit temporarily to get my bowed URB chops back. Our producer turned into a jerk, which was a drag because I really liked the manager and the vocalist. I'd still be making some jack off of this deal, but the creative spirit was fading, and I really don't need the money badly enough to sell my soul yet.The upright is sounding killer again, and I hope to be looking for another band after a few months to myself. Peace, Love, and Good Bass to all. 72 Thu, Oct 24, 7:28PM EST AATS Hi fellas and gal(s)! My bassist uses only a chorus on his bass, he came to a gig without it one night and the bass corner didn't sound as full, he hasn't left it home since. I think it's the T C electronic one. 73 Fri, Oct 25, 0:46AM EST Bernie B in the PT Electric is modified by Sans Amp Bass DI to give it some crunch, and URB goes through a Paracoustic DI {thanks for the tip Azbug} to help filter a little more wood into the sound. Other than that I let my fingers or bow colour the sound, though there was a time when I'dve given my left nut for a good wah wah peddle for upright. With a feedback heavy hog like URB, a solid bow technique plugged through a wah-wah I would've gone whack on some old Cream or Hendrix tunes. 74 Fri, Oct 25, 8:40AM EST MoosBros Bernie,,, just the idea of that is demented.....~~!! I always wanted to learn to play the cello... I love that tone... 75 Fri, Oct 25, 11:05AM EST crimins Hello all > I haven't posted here for quite some time, but I wanted to share my experience of seeing the Chick Corea Elektric Band last night here in Orlando. What a show! I was a little disappointed that Patitucci wasn't on the bill, but Jimmy Earl more than filled the bass chair with Chick. Jimmy used several basses, but his main one for the evening was a Ken Smith 6. All the other regulars were there - Gambale, Weckl, Marienthal. Weckl had me mesmerized. I really think Gambale stole the show, however. He's looking like the years are creeping up on him, but man, can he wail on the g****r. If they are coming through near any of you, they are a must-see. 76 Fri, Oct 25, 11:07AM EST crimins Hello all > I haven't posted here for quite some time, but I wanted to share my experience of seeing the Chick Corea Elektric Band last night here in Orlando. I tried to get on this site last night to find that it was down (happens a lot lately). AzBug, The Toby is going direct to the EA amp with no effects and because it was a low bitrate video, it could well be aliasing on the WMP. The Borders is in Glendale Ca. and there have been Borders in a lot of places in L.A. for a long time (the next week we played at the Borders in Pasadena). I almost never put any effects on my bass live and begrudgingly allow it on recordings (post production) if the producer wants it. I am one of those old timers that think a bass should sound like a bass... As you can tell from the video clip I also put myself way up in the mix. I think a live performance should be equal ballance to a recording in that the bass is usually right up front and personal. I jsut got my video editing bay up and running and this was a test to see if I could get something on the web tostream with fair resolution. I will be doing a lot of that in the near future. That band is recording it's second album and we are doing it a little differentr this time and with some surprisingly good results. On the other album (CD) we did it mostly recording all together. This time we are doing (at least) the first 4 tracks Bass & Drums first with keys playing but not recorded. The idea here is to get a great drum track and come back and spend time with the other instruments. If you guys don't mind, I will use this forum as a sounding board for some things I have done. I am interested in getting some outside opinions. Thanks again 79 Fri, Oct 25, 2:01PM EST AzBug BernieB: Hey! Glad to see you back. Sorry the gig didn't work out. Good to hear you are gonna get the URB chops back. How's the Lakland sounding/playing?....... Bassland: I figured it was the WMP. Still sounded great! Good luck with the multimedia stuff. I'm with you on the effects side. Only thing I ever use is compression. In fact, I try not to play without it. I guess compression would be signal processing more than effecting. Some may group it all together? I just replaced my original behringer composer with the composer pro. These pup's are one of the best investments I've ever made. Cheap, rugged (the first one took a beating in my rack), saves my cabinets, and polishes my tone. Can't beat it! Of course this is all IMHO, and YMMV. Funny you mention the new recording tactic; That is the way I'm used to doing it; Bass, Drums, G&&*ar/Keyboard, and a vocal scratch, but I was in one of the bigger production studios here, in Phoenix yesterday and the producer is doing the drums last! Everything else is going down to a click. I guess the drummer doing the gig is not a top notch studio cat so they are gonna make him play to everything else instead of the vice versa. Interesting concept. But, hey, it's not my cashola funding it, so more power to 'em! 80 Fri, Oct 25, 5:24PM EST ChickOnBass hey.. We were in the car and for the first time I heard radio promos for Standing In THe Shadows Of Motown (the movie). The promotion machine ihas started and this film ought to be BIG. I am so happy for the Funk Brothers for after 40 years they are finally getting their dues! The radio station was 92.3 the Beat 87 Sun, Oct 27, 3:25PM EST big g fear>wife said get Orange Clean. Tomato juice is supposed to work well also. On the same note, my next door neighbor has had skunks raiding his chicken coop and stealing the eggs. He has been trapping them. He errantly picked one up from one of the traps last week that he thought was dead. Wrong! He got sprayed directly. He now shoots them first. He had to throw those clothes away. 88 Sun, Oct 27, 10:58PM EST lowlifer Fear this is for things that can be washed to get rid of shunk spraying, like a dog. 1 quart 3.0% hydrogen peroxidw from the drugstore... 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicaronate)... 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. I had several problems with my sound within the last concerts, and I try to work on that. Actually I don't play with effects, but I'm thinking of getting some for working on a better and a more precise tone. in some locations (more the small one) I have too much distortion, what can't be a problem of equipment. what to do to get a heavy, full tone? in that sense, I love Aston Barrett from Bob Marley, his live and studio tone is superb! Anyone have experience with the warwick quadruplet preamp? would a compressor help me? thanks for your help, maybe to my email Andreas.Liedl@gmx.net thanks and best regards, andi 91 Mon, Oct 28, 7:25AM EST Bass Bitch mmmmm nice to see another girl posting on here. I enjoy blues, rock and jazz and I would like to buy a bass that I can grow into over time. I was in a shop yesterday and started fooling around with a Warwick (thumb tone) and really liked the sound and the feel. Anybody out there who can give me some advice on Warwick or recommend any other brand. Steve 94 Mon, Oct 28, 4:58PM EST MoosBros Steve.... you might wanna check out the new Lakland Skyline series basses,,,, they would certainly be one you could happily keep for a long time.. exellent tone, value and quality 95 Mon, Oct 28, 5:00PM EST old timer Steve , first of all , Welcome . I dont want to sound like a dickhead , for lack of a better word , but , a Warwick Thumb bass is kind of pricey to start out on . What if by some chance you decide you dont want to play bass ? Thats a big investment to take a chance on . I'm not trying to talk you out of it , it IS a top notch bass , but maybe growing into it as you improve your playing and technique would be wiser . A really good bass DOES make you sound better but it also makes your mistakes STAND out as well . By all means start out with the best bass you can afford but , try out as many different ones as you can before making your choice...just some free advice . 96 Mon, Oct 28, 10:04PM EST Fear Buy a carvin! Buy a carvin ! Just kiddin' I'll agree with OT... But if the Warwick is in your range ...then by all means ..I'll have to atest to the Lakland I got one and its a good'in . so is my carvin ..and my 2 Ibanez's... and my 76 gibson. Give your fingers a taste of them all thats the best way ...and dont forget to play a Fender Jazz while your at it .. 97 Mon, Oct 28, 11:33PM EST fear Skunk is in the insulation and still spraying !!! Fish and game say it could be rabid its acting strange... tossed Moth balls tossed in 10 cans of foggers...Cranked Ampeg to 11 ... hit a power cord and held it till i couldnt feel anything being numb from feed back sustained vibration,,,, no skunk to be seen... baited food and set up all night twice ...wating for a head shot ....nothing .... all ( and I mean ALL)) of our stuff is in a fumeagating tent set up By the dammage control co that spec's in this sorta stuff ... like they do when dead people are found in a house for over 2 weeks...This is the pitts.... I'm selling out.... I've had enough S&*( to last a life time ... I'm Buying a house in town with a concrete floor `````````F#$^ underpinning and all that Jazz I'll NEVER BUY A Modular or mobile EVER AGAIN If it has wood floor joist.... FORGET IT,!!!,,, Sorry to rant Brothers but the whole family is very depressed right now And I'm ready to shoot something !!! 98 Tue, Oct 29, 7:34AM EST crimins Some of you may have seen the threads on TBL about MARS music going under, and it's true. I visited the Orlando store last night and signs were all over the place about them going OOB (that's out of business). EVERYTHING in the store is now 10% off the lowest sticker price, but I heard a sales guy say that as the weeks go on, that discount percentage will go up until they clear the place out. Steve> if there's a MARS near you your might want to check out the deals there for a startup bass. 99 Tue, Oct 29, 9:47AM EST That's for all info on effects pedals. I decided to get the Zoom 506. Steve- I've gotta vote for the Lakland---Mine has been everything that a professional bass is supposed to be at half the price. It has served me well from C&W to Jazz --Lakland's big advantage besideds everything being set up correctly and feeling correct and sturdy is the number of good useable tones you can dial in. Until your fingers learn to dial it in, it's not bad to have a bass on hand that can do a lot of the work for you. Warwicks are exceptionally nice, but the price is a bit stiff for a beginner, and they have a unique sound. Though it is a good sound, it is not as versatile as a Lakland or Fender. That's probably why Fender is still here after all of these years, and why you can hear so many people sound so different on the same two models---Precision/Jazz. Lakland's are nice because they've kept the Fender Feel and they've updated the electronics. Just my two cents worth. 104 Wed, Oct 30, 6:27AM EST Bass Bitch well now, lakland`s are just a cheap copy of musicman. If you can hold a sack of potatoes, then buy a musicman. :-) 105 Wed, Oct 30, 6:29AM EST Bass Bitch .......... if you get a jazz bass- make sure it aint from Mexico- the basses as well as the booze from there is guarenteed to give one a head-ache. 106 Wed, Oct 30, 10:32AM EST AzBug Pull in the reigns, Bass Bitch! Don't mislead the new players around here. OLP's are the cheap copies of the Musicman. The Lakland Skyline series are more affordable copies of the US Laklands and are just about THE best deal out there right now for a decent instrument. I have owned an American Lakland for 2 years now. It's the best studio Bass I own. Just like what Bernie said above; you can tweak on them and get an array of tone. Tweak for hours on a Musiciman and it sound like a Musicman. Excellent sound, at that, but nowhere near as versatile as the Lakland, American, or Korean. Also, next time your in States gimme a call. I'll take you down to Puerto Penasco and we'll see how much of a headache you get after a few shots of Cusano Rojo! :-)Yep, Yep, a few shots of good, undiluted mezcal TQ will fix you right up! 107 Wed, Oct 30, 12:41AM EST Hugh Grant bass bitch> you certainly had to be a woman. narrow-minded point of view, micro-sized brain and probably can't play a clean E. go wash some dishes, bitch! 108 Wed, Oct 30, 1:02PM EST BG103 anybody here 109 Wed, Oct 30, 1:03PM EST anonymous1000 OUCH...! 110 Wed, Oct 30, 1:06PM EST BG103 Does anyone have any comments on the Eden WT-400 traveler head! I have heard for years that Eden stuff breaks down alot! 111 Wed, Oct 30, 5:25PM EST AzBug BG103: I have heard the same thing, but I have the Metro Combo which is the self-contained 2x10 Cab with the WT400 head and I haven't had any problems with it. Then again, I haven't had it out on the road. If I did I would most definitely have it in a shcok-proof anvil case with spring-loaded wheels on it. It would be worth it. The thing sounds awesome and is super versatile. 112 Wed, Oct 30, 7:05PM EST AATS Get a Spector and you won't want another bass, so my bassist says. 113 Wed, Oct 30, 7:52PM EST Bernie B in the PT Music Man, been there and done that---Ain't Jack Shit compared to a G&L, but then again G&L's were the best of Fender and Rickenbacker---tremendously nice combo. But for budget bucks go with the Lakland. Azbug--send me some Mezcal----I'm in need of something to clear out my brain cells. Thanks for the back up. My Lakland, like yours, records exceptionally well. Again the amount of tones you can dial in is a huge advantage. For the cat that was lookin' for an Upright--please let me know what type of music you plan to play. C&W, and Jump music will call for a good old fashioned Kay. If you plan to play Jazz and get the Ron Carter/Ray Brown/Paul Chambers sound--pony up for a Juzek (which will do well in symphonic situations as well). Spectors are nice axes, but again the number of tone is somewhat limited. As to the Fender bloodline I must say that James Jamerson Rocco Prestia, and Jaco all had completely different sounds---yet they all played Fenders. Bass Bitch--Next time you cruise through England, I highly recommend you cruise through the second hand stores looking for a Hayman 40/40. Played one for years until it got ripped off. Knowing your penchant for european axes, i.e., Clover, I believe you would find this to be an exceptionally cool axe with a lot of versatile sounds. Bernie B- yes, next time I come back to England I will check that out. I hear the bass centre in London is quite good, but i am a yorkshire girl myself-up north everything is much cheaper. Thanx for the tip. 118 Thu, Oct 31, 11:53AM EST crimins I just bought an Aria Pro II Steve Bailey model 6-string fretless from a fellow in CA. Should be arriving next week. I've had my Carvin 5-string fretless for over 2 years now, but I wanted to get a 6 since my fretted bass is also a 6. I'll be selling the Carvin. I'll try locally first, but if that doesn't work, be on the lookout at bassgear.com if anyone's interested. 119 Thu, Oct 31, 11:37PM EST West coast bass I need some tips on bass soloing for jazz. Is anyone good enough to help me 120 Fri, Nov 1, 8:19AM EST Bass Bitch west coast- learn to recognise 2minor 7`s and dominant 5`s, and then learn riffs from old jazz records- alot of jazz shit has only such 2 5 progressions- for instance Miles Davis` `TUNE_UP` listen to how he tackles such patterns. Learn that jazz has no rules, and that many people don`t even think about scales- they just go with the flow- and play utside`- but I reckon that it is also important to play nside`LOL have fun, and if your stuck, just adjust your amp when you are not sure. :-) 121 Fri, Nov 1, 6:08PM EST PABass BG103,,, i have been gigging with a WT800 and have not any problems as of yet! 122 Fri, Nov 1, 6:15PM EST PABass Luther.........AHH the McNeils!! Hey Dudes. I hereby promise that this will be the last non-music related sob story that I will ever post on this site. First my Tale of Woe. Then Some Bass Content....My wife and I separated 2 years ago, and I moved to Sacramento, CA. As anyone who lives there can confirm, Northern California is one mighty fine place to live. Well, my wife lured me back to New York with promises of reconciliation, only to reveal (actually, I had to dig to find out) that she's got a serious boyfriend that she could have told me about before I moved. Now I've filed for divorce and I'm stuck in New York for at least a year between my job and my lease. When this year is up, I'm going back to CA forever. 131 Wed, Nov 6, 5:48PM EST Big Bottom The Bass content - Now that I'm sitting alone with my cat in an empty apartment, I tried to think of something that might a) cheer me up, and b) let me make good use of my year long sentence in New York. What makes a bass player happiest? My answer - a brand spanking new bass. I headed out to buy a Rick because I always wanted one, but the one they (Sam Ash, White Plains NY) had had a dead bridge pickup. I then inquired about a 5-string, and was pointed to what I think is a truly cool find that I'd like to share with you, particularly any one who is budget minded (like me). I got a Stuart Spector Designs neck-thru-body 5 string for $599. SSD makes basses that run all price ranges. My bass, if it had been hand made in Woodstock, NY, would run about $5,000. The bass I got was made in Korea to SSD specs, and I swear that you wouldn't know the difference, other than the different electronics and lack of gold plated hardware. Mind you, I've never played a $5,000 bass, so someone who has might feel differently. But the thing is well crafted, sounds great, and feels like furniture, just like a bass ought to. Best Regards to all you low-enders. 132 Wed, Nov 6, 6:31PM EST anonymous When do you know you have no chance of learning how to play the bass been trying for a year a still can't play 133 Thu, Nov 7, 6:36AM EST Andi Lucky you, I've been playing for 10 years and still can't play! So, my question to the bass-players amongst you: got to buy a compressor and have to decide between the joe meek stereo compressor and the dbx160a. whats your recommendation?? thanks and best regards 134 Thu, Nov 7, 7:48AM EST crimins Andi > although I've never used either of the compressors you mention ( I use a dbx 260 stereo - cheaper than the 160a) I have seen more bass players mention using the dbx160a than the Joe Meek. I've seen the Joe Meek mentioned more in recording studio use. Hope this helps. 135 Thu, Nov 7, 8:02AM EST MoosBros I have a compressor in my bass rack setup,, but,, since I've gotten it,, I have found that I really don't like how it affects the feel and tone of my playing... so I pretty much don't use any processing anymore... I leave that up too the soundguy in the FOH or whatever,,, but my stage rig is pretty much just a straight shot from my fingers to the bass to amp to speakers... 136 Thu, Nov 7, 8:07AM EST MoosBros The compressor is an Ashely single channel of some sort..it resides in the rack and is used just as a peak limiter so the SWR Stereo800 doesn't wreak havock with the Ampeg SVT Classic 808 cabinet.. the same cabinet sounds just fine when I use the Ampeg B15R to drive it, and doesn't sound like it needs any compression..... it is usually my 1st choice for most gigs, unless it's a huge stage, outdoors,, or I suspect the rest of the band is going to be louder than hell.....I guess I like tubes....... 137 Thu, Nov 7, 9:51AM EST Gonzales hello to you... tips on improvisation, anyone? 138 Thu, Nov 7, 11:37AM EST What is the best bass and amp for playing gospel music, I was given a ibanez sr400rb and a ampeg b100r will this combo work or should I go out an buy my own setup. 139 Thu, Nov 7, 12:52AM EST crimins A# - hey, whatever sounds good to you. I don't think I'd be using an SVT for gospel, but something in the mid- to lower-decibel level should fit. Best bass? Once again, whatever sounds good to you. 140 Thu, Nov 7, 1:12PM EST anonymous What evil forces on earth would make a poor man say that he prefers California over New York? Mankind is a wicked race indeed. 141 Thu, Nov 7, 1:15PM EST old timer BigBottom...Sorry you're 'stuck' in NY , but dude , would you rather be stuck in Clevland ? ( Sorry there JohnnyA ! )Anyway , I agree with you on the SSD , I've got one from Woodstock and the imported version is very close to it . Really the biggest difference is the tone , if that makes sense . You got a sweet deal , enjoy it while you 'serve your sentence'...! 142 Fri, Nov 8, 5:06AM EST Bass Bitch with new batteries. hi guys, hey any-one ever try the yamaha John patti. model? I have the chance to buy one cheap. I will say a teary-eyed good-bye to my clover. pro`s cons? I think the cheesy video that John made is putting me off buying his endorsed bass. What do you guys think? 143 Fri, Nov 8, 7:33AM EST MoosBros BassBitch,,, I have the TRB6P.... it is a very nice souding, playing bass. It has a WIDE neck, so be sure you can deal with that. THe mids are quite smooth and jazzy,, and it has a huge, deep low end tone.. the bridge saddle piezo pickups git it a very "woody" sound. They aren't for everyone,, but ,, I doubt I'll ever sell mine. I found it used,, in a pawn shop, but it still wasn't all that cheap. Around $1000 USD....but worth it... 144 Fri, Nov 8, 9:56AM EST JohnnieA old-timer>> No offence taken. I was doing a life sentence in the land of the Cleves, but escaped during the summer of 72. I would have opted for a pale blue, or something about over the top- but I know that this isn`t important. A friend has also a 50 piece thru neck, but real expensive even though also second hand. About girlfriends, well you know, some-one told me that the best thing about being a pro is that you have pick of the bunch (girlswise) after every gig. You know, since changing my stage-name to bitch, you would have thought that other girls would take offense. But I find that even at smaller gigs, girls swarm around like flies. It is cool, but sometimes that bitch wants her peace. All my contracts now state that the changing room must have a bed or a couch for just that purpose. When I was studying, I never believed the stories my tutors would tell about after-gig escapades. It seems that when you are in the limelight, everybody wants a piece of you. Any of you guys already jealous and frothing at the mouth? LOL 154 Sat, Nov 9, 9:08AM EST Bass Bitch MOos Bros, and yes variety is the spice of live. I rarely hear a fretless player play that! If I'm wrong, I would appreciate some help on the issue. 2- Harmonics slide: It seems that I can't get a harmonic slide on the 12th fret. Everywhere else it's ok. Why is that? Thanks.... 171 Sat, Nov 16, 5:10PM EST Myungian hey peeps 172 Sat, Nov 16, 5:11PM EST Myungian Can anyone tell me a good website that contains information about how the bass exactly works? the electrical/technical stuff i mean. Octaves? Tuning? Would you be talking about unisons at the 5th fret and the next string open? I tune my fretless, usually starting with the A string to an A/440hz source; Then, Harmonics the rest of the way. As for ascending and descending harmonic slides from the 12th fret; You might want to check the set of your guitar. You may have a dead spot, or your action may be set a bit high? Hope some of this helps and good luck! 179 Mon, Nov 18, 1:36PM EST FENDERGENDERBENDER Could anyone explain to me the difference between the Precision and the Jazz? Besides the pickup configuration and the narrower neck? 180 Mon, Nov 18, 2:18PM EST Peruman Azbug> I'm sorry, My english does not seem to improve with time. Neither my fretless playing. What I meant was: If I am playing a C in the third fret on the A string, and try to make that a litlle fatter with the C in the fifth fret on the G string, I ALWAYS have to fine-tune that second note, instead of hitting it right on the head. I know that the common advice is: Practice more and more. I am doing this and I find it REALLY hard. It sounds laughable, but I would like to see some of those very good fret players to play a groove in octaves and make that sound PERFECTLY ( that is the keyword ) in tune. 181 Mon, Nov 18, 3:21PM EST crimins Peruman > you are correct. The only way to get octaves right is to do it over and over until you finally get your left hand muscles trained to do it. I've gotten pretty good at it, but I still have to look at the fretboard. 182 Mon, Nov 18, 4:05PM EST AzBug Peruman: crimins is correct. You have to practice until you get the muscle memory going in your favor. Believe me, I know it's tough, but it's the only valid way to get it down. What I feel is the best recommendation I can give is in the approach to practicing; don't beat yourself to death with it and don't make expectations of yourself you can't keep. Pick up your Bass, adjust your left hand until your fingers are in the correct position and pluck away. If it isn't working and you're getting frustrated, put the Bass down and come back to it later. This has worked the best for me. I hope it may help you? Another key point; Patience! 183 Mon, Nov 18, 4:12PM EST AzBug Peruman: Something else that might help; I got this from Gary Willis when I was fortunate enough to grab a couple hours of his time when he was in town; Practice fretless intonation with a known, valid tone source. Ensure whatever you're using to produce tone is at A 440hz. I have one of those Boss Dr. Rhythm boxes that produces musical tone AND cool rhythm loops so I can practice intonation and time together. Again, good luck! 184 Mon, Nov 18, 6:00PM EST Peruman Thank you, guys. This Gary Willis thing sounds very interesting, I will try to write some simple bass lines in CAKEWALK and play along. 185 Mon, Nov 18, 6:06PM EST Peruman Crimins> I am a huge fan of mr. Berlin. Wouldn't you know where can I find a transcription of his solo on "BACH"? And, as we were talking about technique, I don't think I know a bass player that sound so fast and CLEAN on the E string. 186 Mon, Nov 18, 6:06PM EST Peruman If you do, let me know, please! 187 Tue, Nov 19, 7:17AM EST Bass Bitch Gary Willis? I organised a concert for him in Z rich, I brought a beer over to him, and just thought that I was a groupy. He don`t drink beers that are given to him. Maybe he he scared of a terrorist attack. From the `heineken clan? Or maybe he just don`t drink beer?..LOL 188 Tue, Nov 19, 9:54AM EST crimins Peruman > sorry, but I don't know where you can find that transcription from Jeff B. Maybe someone else in here does? 189 Tue, Nov 19, 10:22AM EST AzBug Bass Bitch: That's funny! When I sat down for a 'Master Class' with him, I found him to be friendly, yet pretty quiet. Maybe a little introverted, but I'll tell you what, that guy can play! He performed a clinic before private sessions and pretty much blew everybody away!... Peruman: If I'm not mistaken, Berlin has a school and answers emails at his address at the school. You could go right to the source! After my jaw was picked up off the floor I remembered a few nice pieces that caught my eye. Any new thoughts on the Series-i Omega cut out? 193 Tue, Nov 19, 10:48PM EST Archer Peruman, the only thing I would add would be spaced repetition. The brain tends to burn a path for something better if you do it several times a day instead of one long session ect. That lets you "forget" it and then re remember it. That is a little esoteric but true. Also try removing your hand from the neck, then back for the "chord", then release the neck repeat. You may also want to read "Hiding non linear intervals in symetrical idioms". 194 Tue, Nov 19, 10:50PM EST Archer AZ, done any gigs with a guitarist named Danna out there? 195 Wed, Nov 20, 4:27AM EST Billy Sheenan Hi guys! someone want o chat with a spanish bassist? 196 Wed, Nov 20, 4:28AM EST Billy Sheenan hey! 197 Wed, Nov 20, 7:16AM EST Bass Bitch AZBUG, yeah he can play, and has an unusual approach to playing. I find his videos alittle unstructered though. Mayb he was just pissed off that night because everbody wanted to talk with him. Alain Caron is cool though, I was talking to him for over an hour......... he`s not a big-head neither, which is nice. It is interesting to speak personally with world-class players, if only to find out what kind of people they are. The guys from `SWEET` were pretty much down to earth, I played a closer for them a few weeks ago, the first gig on their world tour. Check them out if they are playing near you, the singer/bass-player has a great bass. The band are tight as Britney Spear`s arse-hole. 198 Wed, Nov 20, 10:27AM EST AzBug Bass Bitch: I hear ya'! Willis is a great player. I don't think he was pissed. He's just very soft spoken and quiet. I think he is a great technical player, but, in my opinion, Alain Caron is the next 1 or 2 levels up from him. Caron is a natural. I've never had teh chance to meet him. As far as I can tell he rarely comes to my area of the world. I would definitely jump at the chance to talk with him! I have a couple of his solo CD's. He's a master! 199 Wed, Nov 20, 10:30AM EST AzBug Archer: Sorry, I've never met, or heard of Danna. What genre does he/she play? I don't get out too much around here. If it's a gig it's usually with a piano player I like to play with and in some small Jazz club around town. Most of my playing these days is in the studio. 200 Wed, Nov 20, 1:11PM EST Bass Bitch Caron is a great guy, not just a great musician. On the road alot though. That can get ya down. 201 Wed, Nov 20, 3:20PM EST crimins Az & BB > Man, am I jealous. Alain Caron and Gary Willis never come into Florida as far as I know. I would travel several hundred miles to see either one of them. They are two of my favorites! Maybe I'll check their web sites to see if they are coming this way. 202 Wed, Nov 20, 3:57PM EST AzBug crimins: I think Willis has been to Bass Central a couple times... not sure. Caron is french canadian, and according to his web page sked he doesn't come south of the canadian border very often. He's over in europe quite a bit. He's super popular in france. 203 Wed, Nov 20, 6:04PM EST Bass Bitch I met Willis and Caron- but am nearly ashamed to say the artist with the most energy I ever saw was Henry Rollins. 204 Thu, Nov 21, 8:16PM EST Mr.Bass Gary Willis played at Bass Day a few years ago in NYC. His playing was to over the top for my taste, or maybe I should say it was just over my head, but when he played it was flawless. I wasn't that familiar with him at the time. There were so many bassists there I think he decided to do something totally different and he started out with just strange sounds coming from the bass. 205 Fri, Nov 22, 4:44AM EST OBJECT id="WMPlay" width="322" height="294" classid="CLSID:22D6F312-B0F6-11D0-94AB-0080C74C7E95" codebase="button standby="Loading Microsoft Windows Media Player components..." type="application/x-oleobject" VIEWASTEXT PARAM name="FileName" value="button PARAM name="ShowControls" value="1" PARAM name="ShowDisplay" value="0" PARAM name="ShowStatusBar" value="1" PARAM name="AutoSize" value="0" PARAM name="DisplaySize" value="2" EMBED type="application/x-mplayer2" PLUGINSPAGE="button filename="button name="WMPlay" showcontrols="1" showdisplay="0" showstatusbar="1" autosize="0" displaysize="2" width="322" height="294" /OBJECT 206 Fri, Nov 22, 4:47AM EST Sorry about the above, I was trying to post a video of my band and it did not work. I'll tell you what - Tom Kennedy on bass just knocks me out. He and Weckl fit like hand and glove. Tom's playing is funky, tasty, in the groove, and "over the top" in just the right places. If you can check out some of the Weckl Band's CDs, do it. 210 Sat, Nov 23, 0:22AM EST Mr.Bass crimins..I agree, I have 3 CD's by Weckl and they are great. 211 Sat, Nov 23, 6:30PM EST Luther I've met Weckyl...he's not a nice guy...very pushy and hoity-toity... A buddy of mine was a highly sought after high end foreign car mechanic back in the mid-80's. Weckyl brought his Porshe 911 Carrera in for some work and was a total douche bag. My pal called me to come over and meet him just for shits and giggles. I was put off and couldn't care less how many chops the guys had. I hung with Yes a couple of weeks ago...Alan White, great guy, fun to talk to...Steve Howe, nice guy too, won't shake hand because of arthritis, Rick Wakeman, smarmy, witty and ball busting, John Anderson...great guy to talk to..very spiritual and definitely under the influence of cannibus...Chris Squire...stand-offish asshole with way too much booze in his system. Hope everyone has a great holiday season. 216 Sun, Nov 24, 10:57PM EST Luchesi de KoRoNa Question for all you six string bassists: Who do you think is better on the six-stringer, John Myung from Dream Theater, or Lesly Claypool from Primus? 217 Sun, Nov 24, 11:41PM EST I don't know that I'd call either of them a bass player in the more standard sense of the word.@ least Myung can play in tune though---even if he's not my cup of tea 218 Mon, Nov 25, 9:54AM EST Peruman To be honest, I don't see the point in using a six string if the four stringers still beat the hell out of you. I used to play a four string tuned BEAD for a while, but I decided that I should first play the "regular bass" decently. And I've been playing for 16 years, it's not that I play that bad. I recently started out on the fretless and I'm having a hard time with that. Well, seems I've wandered a litlle bit, Between Myung and Claypool I stick with Myung. HOWEVER, as I said, listen to "Perfect Stangers" by Deep Purple and Dream Teather, you will hear how Myung is a poor carbon copy of Glover. 219 Mon, Nov 25, 10:02AM EST anonymous 220 Mon, Nov 25, 11:01AM EST crimins I would prefer a comparison of Patitucci and Alphonso Johnson on 6-string rather that Myung and Claypool. 221 Mon, Nov 25, 11:09AM EST AzBug Anthony Jackson? Steve Bailey (well, kinda)? Jimmy Haslip? 222 Mon, Nov 25, 11:39AM EST Peruman Steve Bailey scared me to death on that Bass extremes video. I bought it because I like Wooten very much, and was unaware of Steve. Well, in my opinion, Steve is light-years ahead of Victor. Anthony Jackson is a player that I am STILL unaware of. Of course I have heard of him, but haven't listened to any of the albums that he played on. Can anyone recommend me a good one ( Closer to rock, if there is one )? I didn't like what I checked out from Haslip. A friend showed me some tapes from yellowjackets and I really did not dig it. Maybe it was the wrong ones? Patitucci is a player that I love very much. He's very versatile and a very good acoustic player, too. But what I enjoy most on him is to see his funny face when he is playing. He really gets into the music. 223 Mon, Nov 25, 11:39AM EST Peruman Steve Bailey scared me to death on that Bass extremes video. I bought it because I like Wooten very much, and was unaware of Steve. About the best example I can think of for you to listen is Al Dimeola's Casino album. Circa; mid-70's. Marco Mendoza is another good fretless 6 player. 226 Mon, Nov 25, 12:51AM EST Bass Bitch mmmmmm all this talk of Patitucci is REALLY making me wanna buy his 6 string bass. The shit woood colour puts me off though. Wood and dark colours just look shitty on stage. That is why my graphite-neck clover is standing in the corner. Does any-one know if they do bright blues or reds with mother-of-pearl lettering? I know that the sound is the most important, but my shows the visual stuff is important too. My drummer did his solo, and I came running on stage and whipped his cymbals with a cat nine tails whip. It was cool, but unfortunately he couldn`t play any further `cause he was laughing so hard. An old perv in a raincoat came to me after the concert and offered me 100 Swiss francs to whip his arse. The moral of the story is: be creative in preparing your shows, but the best things come spontaniously. AND: be aware that it could back-fire. (and no I didn`t whip an old dudes arse-hole before you ask) 227 Mon, Nov 25, 12:52AM EST Bass Bitch Azbug, I just saw you post- the drummer who I was just talking about is also a Berklee grad. I bet not even a Berklee diploa can prepare you for a gig with me. LOL 228 Mon, Nov 25, 1:45PM EST crimins Az > yeah, them too. Peruman > check out Haslip's two solo CDs - Arc & Red Heat. I have the see-thru Teal Blue,,, it was also offerd in a translucent RED, and an Amber(rare as hens teeth) finish as well... I haven't played one of the newer ones .... they aren't even neck-thru anymore....more like a souped up TRB bolt-on..... as I had mentioned in an earlier post,, the older TRBp models are highly under-rated basses.... they play well,, AND sound great... 230 Mon, Nov 25, 3:15PM EST MoosBros this is a nice Yammie bolt-on.... button 231 Mon, Nov 25, 3:17PM EST MoosBros this is the new bolt-on TRB model.... not even in the smae league as the original model...button 232 Mon, Nov 25, 5:17PM EST AzBug Bass Bitch: Is there such thing as being prepared for a gig with you? :-) All Yamaha basses are just too big and clumsy for me. The Pattitucci and TRB's are about the best feel in my experience, yet still big, and clunky. The body is almost as big as you would expect a neck-thru' to be. Wake up amd smell the coffee; Get a Lakland and let it teach you how to play the bass. Lakin will make one for you in colors even YOU would be embarrassed to strap on for stage. *LOL* 233 Tue, Nov 26, 1:00AM EST RuSep any opinions on Englehardt basses, ES1 and ES9, I'm in the market for a bass and need some input 234 Tue, Nov 26, 2:05PM EST Bass Bitch AZBUB- did you say "strap-on"? ........ now there is a thought. Pretty simple huh ? 264 Sun, Dec 1, 12:33AM EST anonymous1000 Oh , that was me above ! 265 Sun, Dec 1, 12:33AM EST crimins Well, GET REAL, I used to play g***R back about 35 years ago, and have owned one off and on over the years, but don't own one now. If your post infers that any 6-string bass-player has a secret desire to be a g****r player, then I agree with BB - GET REAL. Consider the tuning - 6-string bass = BEADGC, g****r = EADGBE. Not the same is it? 266 Sun, Dec 1, 1:19PM EST There are some who call me... Tim To Bass Bitch: No, I'm not one of those. I picked up my bass guitar and played that solo without looking. To Anonymous1000: I agree: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I'm not insulting Steve Bailey, I think he's a good bass player, but from all the great things I've heard about him I guess I was just expecting more. 267 Sun, Dec 1, 1:48PM EST big g I got to see Wooten and Bailey doing an Ampeg clinic. Next to Vic, Steve seemed lacking, but still a very good bassist who shows his devotion to Jaco. I don't have any Albums with Bailey, but then, I don't have any Wooten albums either. I know one of our own bass chat regulars gave Vic a custom bass (thinking he might get an endorsement)and will never do that again. Also before I had the chance to see Steve, I had heard the opposite, that he was a wanker. I thought he was a lot better than that. 268 Sun, Dec 1, 2:16PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Vic's a good bass player, but he too is overrated in my opinion. And out of curiosity, does anyone here play a K5 Ibanez? 269 Sun, Dec 1, 3:43PM EST AzBug Tim: It's cool. I used to be like you, then I realized that we, as musicians, need to respect the fact that anybody who has devoted the time, energy, and talent to get as good as these guys are. I feel you need to have respect for that, regardless if you like their tunes, style, note selection, etc. I have one of Bailey's solo CD's that was only released in Japan. It's unlike any of the other playing you hear from him. The Wooten/Bailey duet stuff is mostly open jamming. When he's playing his own compositions he's pretty much on it. Great player with some of the best fretless intonation I've heard. Victor is a GREAT Bass player, bottom line. Again, you don't have to like his style and all that, but the dude has spent countless hours mastering his own style. 270 Sun, Dec 1, 6:40PM EST Get Real crimins;;; you made my argument for me, you by your own admission USED to be a guitar player...that was my point, a lot of SIX string bass players I know personally USED to play guitar, NOT all of course but more than not. Bass Bitch you have an appropiate moniker for your comments keep up the bitchiness. 271 Sun, Dec 1, 7:30PM EST MoosBros Is there a problem with being a multi-instrumentalist? What IS your point? I have been a working bassist for some 30 years, but I can STILL wank a guitar better than most guitarists I've heard....and now I play drums.... harp, banjo, mandolin....as far as playing guitar OR bass goes,, they are TWO completely different instruments,,, and multi-string basses are like big drum kits,, they give you more colors to choose from,, and make certain things a little eaiser to present... just tools for the job buddy,,, you oughtta try it sometimes,, you know,, WORKING as a musician in a variety of contexts... 272 Sun, Dec 1, 9:06PM EST Get Real Moos....you can still WANK a guitar better than most guitarists that means you were a guitarist first..this is getting easier by the minute. Point taken. 273 Sun, Dec 1, 9:34PM EST anonymous what point? the point is,, Bass and Guitar are two totally different stringed instruments,, and each require a different mindset to be correctly played,,,I can play a 6 string bass as solidly as I can a 4 stringer, or an URB,,, but for certain things,, the 6 will be either easier to play,, or just flat out give me more choices,in the proper context of course,,, but all in all,, it's about a solid groove and tateful , musical choices... I've auditioned hundreds of guitarists, bassists, drummers,,,and the same one rule applies to ALL,,, ANY instrument,, 99% of the guys out there have an instrument and NO CLUE on WHAT TO PLAY,,,or when to play,, and MOST importantly,, when NOT to play... it takes years to understand that the best approach to music that works best in ANY group is to know exactly what to NOT PLAY... I've got no time or patience for wet behind the ears wankers,,,, Even Victor Wooten provides the pocket, first and foremost,, otherwise,, none of us would have ever heard of him in the first place..... asking the question you ask is not a lot different than the chicken or the egg bullshit,,, who cares?? 274 Sun, Dec 1, 11:46PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Still people don't understand what I'm getting at... I'll say it ONE MORE TIME: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I hold these guys, Steve Bailey and Wooten, in the highest respect. It's just that I was lead to believe they were more than they were when I actually heard them. 275 Sun, Dec 1, 11:50PM EST There are some who call me... Tim As for the K5 Ibanez thing... I'm getting a bass guitar made for me. It's made like the K5 Ibanez, only it's a six stringer and it's fretless. I don't know how it's gonna sound... but it's something to experiment with. If it turns out good, is anyone interested in buying one? If so, I'll see if I can give you the address of this guy who's making it. 276 Mon, Dec 2, 4:44AM EST Bass Bitch an a bass like an ibanez? mmmmmmm ibanez guitars are cool for rock and heavy shit-but basses? It is like the Godin guitars-real cool, but they are still trying to figure the bass side of things out. I would suggest that you go back to special ed classes Tim. 277 Mon, Dec 2, 7:30AM EST There are some who call me... Tim Bass Bitch: Now I see where you got your name, SHEESH!!! As for the Ibanez bass thing: there is a big difference between a K5 Ibanez and any other Ibanez bass guitar. In fact, there's a big difference between a K5 and ANY bass guitar. The K5 can be tuned extra low... like you said, Bass Bitch, heavy. It's practically a different instrument. So whatever it is you have against Ibanez bass guitars, don't even take it into consideration with the K5, because NO OTHER BRAND is doing anything like it. And the guy making my bass guitar doesn't work for Ibanez: he works independantly. It's a local thing. 278 Mon, Dec 2, 8:27AM EST Peruman Tim> May I ask who do you think "the greatest bass player" is? 279 Mon, Dec 2, 10:09AM EST crimins Well, I'll say this, Tim and Get Real have stirred things up in here. It was real quiet here for quite some time. 280 Mon, Dec 2, 2:45PM EST Bass Bitch TIM: let me put it another way. Any bass player worth his/her salt wouldn`t even look at an Ibanez bass. If saw saw one laying on the pavement, I would walk past with-out picking it up. And you say "extra low" - well if you fuck around with frequency, then don`t expect much tonal quality- get extra thick strings and some bartolini pick-ups. I reckon what is to be done with basses has already been done. I guess we could talk about the MIDI thing now. LOL 281 Mon, Dec 2, 2:53PM EST crimins BB > well, are you saying Gary willis is not worth his salt? He plays Ibanez. 282 Mon, Dec 2, 5:02PM EST MoosBros I've been playing a Ken Smith Custom 5 for a prety good while,, and even it's not considered a "boutique" high end bass anymore these days.... go figure? 283 Mon, Dec 2, 5:27PM EST anonymous1000 Oh Oh...here comes that brand loyalty thing again....Fear , tell us about Carvin one more time...fear the mojo ! 284 Mon, Dec 2, 6:11PM EST Mr.Bass I guess I am caught right in the middle here, I use a five @ times, but recently have been going back to the 4. I think you should use what ever instrument it takes to get your idea out or evoke an emotion or just have a great time playing, it's all music right? 4, 5, 6, or 22 string, they are only vehicles for what we want to express as musician's..Ok I will get off my soap box now. crimins was right it did stir up some s#$t. 285 Mon, Dec 2, 6:31PM EST Luther Heck, if I saw an Ibanez laying the street I'd trade it in...might even get some bass strings for it, LOL. Crimins, the Gary Willis model Ibanez is quite nice and priced to sell. Of course his personal bass is nothing like the production models. Mr.Bass, I'm playing at the Deacon's Den in Mt. Snow, VT Dec. 13-14 if you're planning on doing some skiing that weekend. It's just a hop, skip and a jump from your neck of the woods. I hear they have some decent conditions already. Fear, I picked up a Carvin 6-string a while back. You were right about them!!! OT has no loyalties to any brand...he owns one or two of every kind made, LOL. 286 Mon, Dec 2, 6:56PM EST big g 1 string Woogie Fritzmier 2 string the bloke with the presidents of the usa 3 string Tony Levin 4 string James Jamerson 5 string me and mr. bass 6 string Tim Bogart 7 string Bill the budha Dickens 8 string 8 Tom Hamilton 9 string etc etc etc whatever floats your boat. Tim I will make a point of checking out the K5, sounds like it floats yours. Now where is that Ibanez site?? 287 Mon, Dec 2, 7:04PM EST AzBug Mr.Bass: As usual, you are always the one that comes in when we are all ranting and raving, and you make that one, level-headed comment that SHOULD get everybody back on track. As far as I'm concerned, you can stay upon the soapbox all you'd like! :-) .... Luther; According to Willis, his Bass is 'Off The Shelf'. He stated that at the clinic, and again during my lesson with him. The only thing he does is tweak the neck to get rid of dead spots. That's what the man says. I guess it's up to us whether to believe him, or not. He actually found and fixed a dead spot on my Roscoe during my lesson with him. Thought that was pretty cool. 288 Mon, Dec 2, 7:05PM EST AzBug You too, g! 289 Mon, Dec 2, 7:12PM EST I chased down the info on the K5. I found it interesting that at their website instead of referencing the model # you have to follow the Fieldy link. ROTFL button 290 Mon, Dec 2, 7:40PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Peruman: My opinion of the best bass player? When you get as good as a lot of the bass players out there, it doesn't come down to who's the best, it comes down to who you prefer. <<<<< Bass Bitch: The solution your picking for an extra low sound is like the good ol' "two cans and a strand of yarn" excuse for a telephone. If you don't like Ibanez bass guitars, DON'T PLAY THEM for christs sake. SOME people find use for them. Hell, I own a four-string Fender, a six string Yamaha, and a K5 Ibanez. As far as I can tell, every brand is good for something. So when Yamaha comes out with a K5, then I'll ditch the Ibanez, but for now I'm sticking with it. ANYWAYS!! That's beside the point. The point was this fretless six-string K5-like bass guitar I'm having made for me. Anyone interested? And Bass Bitch, this isn't beind made by a name brand, so I don't wanna hear your Bass Bitching. 291 Mon, Dec 2, 7:59PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Oh, and Peruman: I know who the best bass player is. It's Bob Saget. You know... the guy from Full House? The guy who hosted America's Funniest Home Videos? The guy is one Shpadoinkal bass player. 292 Mon, Dec 2, 8:35PM EST changes canonymous Are there any Modulus Quantum fans out there? 293 Mon, Dec 2, 10:14PM EST Peruman Tim> That's why he has a lot of "bassless" jobs, huh? but I agree with you, I don't think there is one guy out there who is the best player. I have a lot of favourites, however. We were talking about Vic Wooten and Steve Bailey. Well, In my opinion, Wooten's "Show of hands" is THE MOST BORING bass cd EVER! But he is still one of my favourites. 294 Mon, Dec 2, 11:04PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Peruman: For slap work, I kind of enjoy Flea from Red Hot Chille Peppers. For finger work, I really liked John Entwistle from The Who: he really had Thunderfingers. It's a shame Entwistle died a few months ago. But who's the best? I'll never know. No one ever really will. 295 Tue, Dec 3, 5:57AM EST Bass Bitch the ibanez willis own will never be on sale to mere mortals- his is special. I stand by my opinion right ir wrong. And Tim, flea is a cool player, not many would dispute that- but he ofetn fucks- up on live shows, and plays a whole load of wrong notes. Gifted but not concentrated? 296 Tue, Dec 3, 7:18AM EST MoosBros "gifted, but not concentrated"...... now that describes a LOT of musicians I know,,,, LOL 297 Tue, Dec 3, 7:50AM EST There are some who call me... Tim Bass Bitch: I didn't say he was one of the best, I just said I've taken a liking to his slap-work.------The thing about bass guitars is that there's so many ways you can play them, you can't really compare a lot of bass players because they're doing something COMPLETELY different. This was why Lesly Claypool didn't make it into Metallica after Cliff Burton died: he was too different. It's comparing apples and oranges. 298 Tue, Dec 3, 8:07AM EST Bass Bitch actually I have to see that I don`t fall into that catagory- I think about sex alot when I am on stage- especially if I am standing too close to my massive stack and the bass makes my pussy piercings vibrate. Who wants to see the pictures of a backstage party? *EG* The bitch has wild parties................ and a good collection of underwear thrown onstage. :-) Now that lightened the mood in here didn`t it? LOL 299 Tue, Dec 3, 8:08AM EST Bass Bitch check out manaprime.ch I am writing shit for their upcomming cd 300 Tue, Dec 3, 11:03AM EST aaannnnoooonnnn OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I hate pussy piercings! All they do is get in the way. It's like biting into your fish and getting a bone. 301 Tue, Dec 3, 12:24AM EST anonymous DISGUSTING BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 302 Tue, Dec 3, 2:45PM EST old timer This conversation went south in a hurry...Tim , you forgot to mention 2 pioneers on Bass , Derek Smalls and of course , the father of all things Bass , Al Gore ! BB , thats what you call lightening the mood ? 303 Tue, Dec 3, 2:58PM EST crimins OT > like you said: the mood went south. 304 Tue, Dec 3, 3:31PM EST crimins OK. I'm outta this conversation. 305 Tue, Dec 3, 4:22PM EST MoosBros I think about sex all the time too,,, whether I'm playin or not.... here lately,, the gigs have been a little thin....Columbia isn't exactly the blues mecca of the south... 306 Tue, Dec 3, 5:09PM EST AzBug Ummm, yes, so, carrying on; I agree that we each need to do what it is that we feel like doing with our Basses. Slap them, pluck them, bow them, 3-4-5-6-7....N strings, whatever. Doing anything else is not less than plagiarism! :-) 307 Tue, Dec 3, 5:25PM EST There are some who call me... Tim ... wow... 308 Tue, Dec 3, 6:59PM EST There are some who call me... Tim We can NEVER forget the true god of the bass guitar: George Clooney. George Clooney, we salute you! 309 Tue, Dec 3, 9:24PM EST Peruman Maybe you have some kind of kinky inspiration when you see George Clooney... And my favourite bass inspiration who is not a bass player is..... AL BUNDY! 310 Tue, Dec 3, 9:37PM EST anonymous If you are near any Mars Music stores you might be able tpo pick up a new Roland Bass synth cheap>> 311 Tue, Dec 3, 10:03PM EST Jim Jamb H E L L O old timer!Where ya been?Hey guys ,Sorry 'Bout the last long winded post,Check out GregWilliams.com 312 Wed, Dec 4, 7:18AM EST crimins Anon > if MARS in Orlando is any indication of the rest of them, all that's left is junk. All the good stuff went in the first two weeks of the liquidation. 313 Wed, Dec 4, 7:35AM EST Bass Bitch well maybe it is true what they say about American people being prude, and uptight. And about piercings, yeah they can get in the way, it depends where you have them- so you don`t know what you are doing if you let them disturb you fun- you must be about 15 and very inexperianced. As for disgusting? well maybe. With time you will learn that sex is something that us adults do. Keep on jerking off to playboy loser. Have a nice day every-one. 314 Wed, Dec 4, 8:22AM EST MoosBros I thought everyone buys Playboy for their articles? 315 Wed, Dec 4, 9:31AM EST mostly anon Playboy has articles? 316 Wed, Dec 4, 10:07AM EST Hey everybody, this is a BASS chat, not a base-instinct chat. 317 Wed, Dec 4, 10:28AM EST Bass Bitch LOL- yeah guys this IS a bass chat. Sorry for going off the beaten path. Da Bitch will be nice to all from now on. Even *gulp* Ibanez lovers. 318 Wed, Dec 4, 11:09AM EST AzBug BB: Yeah, I agree that we need to keep this as a Bass-oriented chat. I'm sure there are those that would love to share your experiences on a private line! That being said; Now, being nice and good to Ibanez lovers?!?!? That is simply pushing it too, TOO far! *LOL* To the dude who's friend is building him a Bass; So, he's using an Ibanez as a guideline? That means he's copying a copy??? :-) 319 Wed, Dec 4, 11:57AM EST Bass Bitch yeah dude, I hear you. But would talking about g-strings be o.k? *wink* 320 Wed, Dec 4, 12:50AM EST AzBug Well, I don't see why not? g- what kinda strings you use? :) 321 Wed, Dec 4, 1:40PM EST anonymous Two words for you bass bitch: PROBABLY FAT! 322 Wed, Dec 4, 3:48PM EST Bass Bitch I use custom-made strings from England. Fat? Well if you call 2 hours in the gym nearly everyday fat- then yeah I`m far. LOL 323 Wed, Dec 4, 3:49PM EST Bass Bitch fat even 324 Wed, Dec 4, 5:14PM EST There are some who call me... Tim AzBug: No, he's not a copying Ibanez, but his building plan is similar to the one that Ibanez used for the K5. Ultimately it'll be a fretless six string bass guitar made to play the same notes as the K5... save for the sixth string of course. 325 Wed, Dec 4, 5:16PM EST There are some who call me... Tim And Bass Bitch: Americans are up-tight? What country are YOU from? 326 Wed, Dec 4, 5:33PM EST MoosBros WHo ever it is talking fat,,, if they're from the USA, then there's a 75% chance that they TOO , are FAT....America the OBESE.... BUt,, it DOES give me a nice place to sit my bass when I play... 327 Wed, Dec 4, 6:34PM EST big g " g- what kinda strings you use? :)" drum roll.....why big of course. ;o) Anon> I've seen BB. Knock it off with the insults, huh? It's pointless. We don't even j=|_|[|> welcome to the chat its great to have you here. I've been lucky enough to meet face to face with at least 5 others who post here and corresponded with many more. All have been very nice people who show their dedication to all things BASS related. Great to have you here. 335 Wed, Dec 4, 9:59PM EST big g Moos> You mean BB had a hat on in that photo? 336 Wed, Dec 4, 11:26PM EST MoosBros yeah,, the HAT was really hard to see.... 337 Thu, Dec 5, 5:11AM EST Bass Bitch LOL oh my God. It`s funny about that hat- after nearly 2 years it is still the topic of conversation. I also have a pic were I am wearing a SEALS uniform, if any-one would like to see it. :-) And "dude just like a lady"?- well that depends too on what kind of training you do. If I would do weights- then yeah- but it is mostly aerobic training- wANNA GO RUNNING WITH ME? YOu`ll fade before I would loser. Tim: I am english, but live in Switzerland. 338 Thu, Dec 5, 7:55AM EST There are some who call me... Tim Bass Bitch: Ah. I'm half-Filipino, FROM the phillipines, and I live in America. 339 Thu, Dec 5, 7:59AM EST The are some who call me... Tim Oh, and as for the whole insult thing. I don't think it's a matter of being one big happy bass playing family, rather than it being a matter of just GROWING THE F*CK UP. 340 Thu, Dec 5, 8:53AM EST Bass Bitch I see. The Phillipines is a nice place to visit. I was gigging in New York too- also an unusual place- to visit. Don`t be upset by comments Tim, as a musician you have to learn to have a thick skin. Dissapointment and putting alot of energy into projects- only to find that they don`t turn out how you want- is all part of the job. Back-stabbing too is an all too often occurance. You`ll meet alot of extrovert people on your travels. Also people who are introvert, and only know how to express themselves through playing an instrument. And musicians are known for being `special`. 341 Thu, Dec 5, 9:09AM EST MoosBros THis is true,,, "special" is a two-edged sword... don't fit into the "day job" scene.. and full time gigging is a roller-coasterlife of misery and elation.... kind of like sex,, what goes up,, must come down.... but it's fun while it lasts.... 342 Thu, Dec 5, 12:22AM EST Bass Bitch I don`t have a day job, I live from playing bass and songwriting. IT is cool being freelance- but you have to learn to "Play the game" -since I have been doing this, I have been successful. 343 Thu, Dec 5, 5:03PM EST There are some who call me... Tim After I moved out of Quezon City, I started gigging all around in Thailand for about six months. My favorite place was the island of Ko Phi-Phi Don. Then I got out of there and started playing in Taiwan. Finally I came here to the USA. It wasn't long before I auditioned for a band and made it in. Now we're gigging just about wherever we can. 344 Fri, Dec 6, 4:39AM EST Bass Bitch some-one told me the best job, but at the same time the worst- is being a bass-player on a cruise ship. I wouldn`t say no though. 345 Fri, Dec 6, 7:17AM EST There are some who call me... Tim. Taking a job on a cruise ship wouldn't be the challenge for me... it would be getting accepted. No one would want my kind bass work on a "relaxing cruise in the Carribean". 346 Fri, Dec 6, 7:51AM EST big g I went to the big city (Sacramento) yesterday and stopped in at GC. I must say for the budget minded that the OLP 5 string seemed to be a very good instrument. For $249 it played very well considering the not so great GC setup. I thought the electronics might use some improvement, but for an old hotroder like me, it would be no big thing. Anybody else tried one? I also tried the new ultra small ampeg amp it gets loud for its size, but not my cup of tea. About $1100 for amp and cab, I think you could spend that amount of money and do much better. I actually like my Workingman 300 with Carvin 2-10 much better (my light and portable rig). Total for that setup was under $600. Anyone else tried the new ampeg? 347 Fri, Dec 6, 8:05AM EST anonymous www.ampeg.com/wwwpage.html 348 Fri, Dec 6, 8:06AM EST anonymous button 349 Fri, Dec 6, 8:07AM EST anonymous button 350 Fri, Dec 6, 8:08AM EST anonymous button 351 Fri, Dec 6, 8:08AM EST anonymous button 352 Fri, Dec 6, 8:22AM EST MoosBros I've seen the new AMpeg stuff,, but I haven't had a chance to play thru it. I'm still using the Ampeg B15R whan I want tubes,, and the SWR Electric Blue for "go light"..... 353 Fri, Dec 6, 8:25AM EST MoosBros I just recently traded away the SWR Bass 350 and a '52 Tele to get a Clark Amplification Piedmont tube guitar amp... so now,, for the bigger shows,, I'll use the Electric Blue to drive the rack set-up. It makes a cool , portable rig just with the Hartke 210XL. 354 Fri, Dec 6, 8:55AM EST big g Forgot to mention the salesman said that Ampeg is coming out with an 800 watt version of this head also. Finally someone is trying to compete with Walter Woods? 355 Fri, Dec 6, 11:10PM EST MoosBros I have an 800 watt amp(SWR) in my rack rig,, but I don't think I've used it hardly twice in the last two years..usually, the 100 watt tube amp is plenty, and with solid pro monitors on the better shows, even the 120 watt Electric Blue has plenty enough to do the gigs.. the new Ampeg stuff sure is small and light though... I'm looking to see how the new wave N/Dyn magnet speakers is gonna change things.... I know Yorkville, MAckie , and a few others now have several models in regular production... It's just the beginning... 356 Sat, Dec 7, 2:31AM EST Archer Some times I'll call you Tim:Got stuck in Bankok for a few days when the singer got sick (local remedy from pharmacy had all the effects of LSD) and ended up giging at a local club for a bit. Nice people and good players. 357 Sat, Dec 7, 11:22AM EST There are some who call me... Tim Archer: Bankok is a nice place... but it's the hottest city in world. And the pollution is enough to make your eyes sting. The people are friendly though. You're lucky you didn't get stuck in Karabi... we had to stay there for two nights before we got a ferry over to Ko Phi Phi Don, and the people there were REALLY unfriendly. Luckily our drummer stood at 6'4" and was built like a tank, because i swear to god that if he weren't there that someone would have tried to mug us. 358 Sat, Dec 7, 12:34AM EST Bass Bitch Tim, well you know that Bossa Nova stuff is cool to play- but it helps to have a sriff drink before starting the gig 359 Sat, Dec 7, 12:34AM EST Bass Bitch stiff ,even 360 Sat, Dec 7, 3:46PM EST MoosBros I had to give up most of my bad habits,,, in my old age,, I couldn't afford the 'risks" anymore..now I just play a lot, mostly... with myself... 361 Sat, Dec 7, 3:50PM EST Bass Bitch you got that on video? *EG* 362 Sat, Dec 7, 4:16PM EST MoosBros hmmm,, yeah,, I shoulda been an "amature" porno star instead of a musician...probably woulda made more $$$$ hahaha...... What I mean't was, I spend a lot of time down in the rehearsal studio practicing alone,,,,and for quite a few years, I gave up drinking and messing with dope... I had fun, "back in the day" though... now,, it's more just about the music.. it's my life,, but here in Columbia,, the market is very very soft.. 363 Sat, Dec 7, 4:17PM EST MoosBros BB,, you should post a picture of yourself on Flashyourrack dot com... it's an interesting website.... 364 Sat, Dec 7, 4:21PM EST MoosBros a real, "eye opener"... hahaha 365 Sat, Dec 7, 6:47PM EST on that site you can only flash the real McCoy. 366 Sun, Dec 8, 8:35AM EST Bass Bitch It is funny you should say that MOOS BROS- I just took my head to a garage to have a custom spray job done. I has some shit stole, and since then I have everything permanently marked and engraved. and to your post....: don`t you think I have the real McCoy- use your name and stop hiding. LOL 367 Sun, Dec 8, 11:45AM EST Bass It BB... I think you should post a pic, you don't really seem shy, just go for it and show him you have the real McCoy 368 Sun, Dec 8, 11:46AM EST Anyone know of a good bass chat site? 369 Sun, Dec 8, 12:13AM EST Bass Bitch maybe I will- I did pics of my new SWR top and box for the insurance. But now the top is in a cool flight-case, and will have a nice spray-job done, I may even do that. It will have "BITCH" sprayed on it- so yo `ll now it`s really mine. *LOL* 370 Sun, Dec 8, 12:17AM EST MoosBros which SWR top are you now using, BassBitch? you mentioned your Mo Bass got stolen? 371 Sun, Dec 8, 2:48PM EST crimins ...... > What's wrong with this one? 372 Sun, Dec 8, 5:00PM EST MoosBros no name,,, you can try Harmony Central if you want a busier message board,, but,, it's a bit hard to stomach sometimes,,, since there are so many kids hanging out there... 373 Sun, Dec 8, 7:11PM EST The Phillipines! You got to be shittin me, they have the most terrible economic woes in that neck of the woods...what did you get paid in, chickens? 374 Sun, Dec 8, 10:47PM EST There are some who call me... Tim GR: watch what you say buddy. I'm from the Phillipines. 375 Sun, Dec 8, 11:43PM EST The question still stands.... timmy 376 Mon, Dec 9, 2:53AM EST Bernie B in the P.T. I agree w/Big G on the OLP. I've posted praise of them before. $250 for a decent 5-string is cheap, and the neck on the one i played was excellent. Throw a Duncan Basslines pickup in that mullet and you'd have a bitchin' little bass amp cheap. Been off this site giggin' for awhile. Yes the music biz has it's highs and lows. You may remember that I left my last project band after the producer turned into a jerk. Well the music biz is a small world, and two weeks later one of the keyboard players who had been in and out of the last band had joined up w/a new band. Their bassist is a mean drunk, and had had too many one night. He started chewing everyone's ass for missing notes here and there, while he was busy either dropping the beat, or turning it around. I got the call immediately and have been happily gigging ever since. We're up for a big audition next month. Could be graduating back into the $200 a night scene. Please say your prayers. I haven't played that circuit since coming back out of retirement, and would really like to see this band do something. Hell even the gu!%@r player is a human being. Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming. 377 Mon, Dec 9, 2:56AM EST Bernie B in the P.T. Bass Amp? I meant Bass- I've got amps on the rain since I will soon be replacing mine. I might look into that new Ampeg only because it need to sound good for Upright and Electric. 378 Mon, Dec 9, 3:01AM EST Bernie B in the P.T. I think that was supposed to be amps on the brain. Oh well, they say that memory and coordination are the first to go. Azbug--help me with some ideas here. Do the Genz Benz regular amps sound good for upright? I know that their Tubeworks Brethren were supposed to be O.K. at it, but the 7200 series is only 130 watts. I need at least 200. I'm thinking about the ML 200 series. I'm not a real big fan of Gallien Kruegers or SWR's, and Acoustic Image is great for Upright, but sucky for electric. Should I just go direct and save my back and money? 379 Mon, Dec 9, 5:22AM EST Bass Bitch MOOS BROS- I got a 750 SWR Pro top. It has a stomp box with a dist, and subwave- I don`t use them though. I wish they would have put 2 other FX on there like reverb, chorus. Oh well I got the shit for free so it don`t matter. GR- even poor countries can have good music and musicians, look at Jamaica. That is the real deal. Look at poor cities in England- some of the best rock bands are from there. 380 Mon, Dec 9, 7:39AM EST MoosBros BassBitch, I had considered the Bass750 myself,, it would actually help me to shed about 20 pounds from my rack, AND have the smae power as befroe, but I've since sold the Bass 350 it would have replaced, and am committed to utilizing the SWR Electric Blue as a preamp to drive the rack... I've never gotten a bad sound out ot the Electric Blue, no matter what bass I used.... BernieB... the Silverado is a bitchin bass amp for electric or URB,, especially if you can one of the originals with the 4x8" speaker configuration... I'be been using an AMPEG B15R lately, but the single 15" cabinet sucks pretty bad.... usually I'll take along an 8x8 cabinet and leave the bottom of the combo home.. I had originally bought it to play URB thru... it looked cool,, but to my ears, never really sounded all that great... 381 Mon, Dec 9, 10:48AM EST AzBug Hey Bernie, congrats on the new gig. I'm "Taking The Leap Of Faith" myself starting at the New Year. Walking away from a $90K corporate job and going with music, full time. PRAY FOR ME!!! *LOL* As for Genz-Benz; I have their little 1x12 Shenandoah acoustic amp. Self contained 90W. I bought it, mainly, for my mandolins, but I had hoped it would be able to work with my URB/EUB's... sadly, even tho' it sounded adequate when I was trying it out, after a good bit of time with it in different situations I found it just can't handle the low fundamentals. Let's put it this way; 'I' can't handle the way it reproduces the low fundamentals! :-) Now, their larger stuff isn't so bad. If I were to be in the market for a stage monitor to replace the Eden, I would most likely get their new 2x10 wedge. Ample power (300W, I think?) and it sounds really decent. I've only played my EUB through one as well as my electrics and it passed the test. I wholeheartedly agree with you that you will need 200, or more Watts to get a bearable tone for your upright. A nice, deep 2x10 or 1x15 cab with response somewhere down around 40Hz wouldn't hurt, either. 382 Mon, Dec 9, 10:56AM EST There are some who call me... Tim GR: The question still stands, but the phrasing DOESN'T. The point is, I sincerely hope you watch your tongue in public, because if you don't then I'm suprised you still HAVE a tongue. 383 Mon, Dec 9, 11:58AM EST JohnnieA AZ> Congrats on your decision to shed the glorious corporate merry go round . I guess if we must chose between one business or another, it should be something we totally enjoy. 90K/yr. job! Gee, I guess I work for the wrong electronics conglomerate. Sounds like the Big was petty fair to you. So, will this new venture take you out of the valley? BTW, what ever happened to that local Blues thing you talked about some time back? Best of luck to you! 384 Mon, Dec 9, 7:06PM EST anonymous Tim> F*CK YOU!!! 385 Mon, Dec 9, 7:55PM EST There are some who call me... Tim Anonymous: What the hell is your problem? Man... if I had a head like yours, I'd probably get it circumcised or something... DICK-HEAD. 386 Mon, Dec 9, 8:58PM EST Tim...I wasn't knocking anyone from the Phillipines, I was just stating a fact that economically they have a lot of problems there. That obscenity wasn't from me. 387 Mon, Dec 9, 10:07PM EST fear s back.A long strange trip its been. When I went to the PI in 78, there were some real good local musicians playing at clubs and playing through some of the most beat up equipment I ever seen, But it sounded good. One can only speculate what they would have done with good gear. 388 Tue, Dec 10, 0:12AM EST Berni B in the P.T. Azbug- You are in my prayers. I left the corporate scene two years ago as you may recall. Left a nice paying heart attack waiting to happen gig on the table. Just in time to dodge this recession too. I've been a much happier person for it, and might've ended up getting layed off from the day gig just in time to miss the opportunities I've caught here lately. If you have enough in the bank to survive six months to a year so that you don't overstress on the financial side, you may have to turn that resignation in tomorrow. Just make sure you have a plan in place (look before you leap kind of stuff) and pray for some divine guidance. I've never been happier, and you'd be amazed how much money you really don't need to survive. MOOSBROS- Thanks for your input as well. I've never been an SWR fan just because of the mid range factor, but I might give them another try. Especially if I do uncover a Silverado 4x8. I've had a couple of buddies try to push me towards the Super Red-Head Combo. 389 Tue, Dec 10, 5:30AM EST Bass Bitch BERNI B. SWR have made alot of improvements in their gear. Try some out before your buy. You`ll be surprised. It is also very reliable. I don`t think I would play anything else at the moment. 390 Tue, Dec 10, 8:32AM EST MoosBros I have been happy with the Blue especially,,, the simple controls with the 3 band pamrametric eq seem very musical... the Bass 350(same pre-amp/amp as the SuperRedHead) and GrandPrix were harder to dial in good tones,, and never seemed quite as warm sounding as the Electric BLue, which was developed originally for the Upright bass... 391 Tue, Dec 10, 8:34AM EST MoosBros I've been a sucker for tubes,, and if I had the bucks, I might try to hunt down a Peavey Classic 400 bass amp or try some of the esoteric stuff from Aguilar.... 392 Tue, Dec 10, 8:36AM EST MoosBros I know a good many dudes who have gone the compact rack route,, using the SansAmp RBI as their preamp. You have infinite choices that way,, but you gotta like the SansAmp for that to work... the BassDriver D/I has been hailed as the best thing since sliced bread... 393 Tue, Dec 10, 10:08AM EST AzBug Bernie: I am in the exact spot you were 2 years ago. Fortunately, the corp. I work for is offering a pretty sweet severance, so with 13+years of dues paid, I am getting a good chunk to survive on. I consider it all answered prayers. Oh, I could kiss a$$ and find another position within the company, but I'm done, man. With the status of corporate America the way it is, I'm just done. I also have a legit music thing in the works. Music ministry, more like. Thanks for the reaffirmation!... Moos: I am one of the herd that has gone over to using that Sansamp D.I. It took a long time to REALLY believe the thing is as good as it is. The only issue I ever have is if the soundtech doesn't send me good signal in the monitor, or if the monitoring system is weak. That's it. Otherwise, that lil' thing is a killer!... Bass Bitch: Dump the SWR stuff! It's a thing of the past. (can't wait to see the egg I've opened with that one! *lol*) 394 Tue, Dec 10, 10:12AM EST AzBug John: Yeah, I can definitely say I benefitted from the Tech Boom of the 90's. Now, we're seeing the results. Moto is pulling out of the Valley. All will be gone in the next 3 years. I am planning on staying here, if I can. Got a whole ton of irons in the fire and really can't justify rolling on at this time. How are things up there at the 'Lovely' place you work at? Thanks for the encouragement! Es Mucho Appreciado! 395 Tue, Dec 10, 11:01AM EST JohnnieA AZ> Well, I have to admit, I am thoroughly disgusted with corporate America and their modus operandi. Within the last five years, our fine executive management has seen fit to our source most of our factory operations to low cost countries i.e. China, India and Mexico. It hasn t worked out very well to say the least, and we have no say in how these brainiacs decide to run the company. All this for for shareholder satisfaction. Seems they have forgotten customer satisfaction. This past year our illustrious CEO has deemed that 40% of engineering functions be farmed out to India. My boss has asked me repeatedly as to which projects I want to ship over there. I say none, but then there s that 40% thing. "catch22" At this point, I have 25 yrs. invested, yet am to young to bail out and scarf any of the retirement bennies. I would have left in a heartbeat if any of my bass designs had clicked. BTW, I still am building the Ergonomic Bass but have abandoned the SSS Bass and Guitar designs, only because they are way too expensive to build. Et al, Please excuse the rant, and lack of bass content. Once again, best of luck to you!! Later 396 Tue, Dec 10, 2:18PM EST Bass Bitch AZBUG - hmmmm. Would you say no if you got thousands of dollars worth of equiptment for free? Be honest??. What is good enough for Marcus bighead Miller is good enough for da bitch. Nice to hear from you again Johnnie A- B Goode won`t you. 397 Tue, Dec 10, 3:37PM EST AzBug You're right. I probably wouldn't turn the stuff down. It's the endorsing I would have a problem with. I have a couple things on the table right now that I am having to decide on. It's not easy. 398 Tue, Dec 10, 3:55PM EST crimins AzBug > congrats on your decision. I wish I had the guts to do that, but having had to deal with the big "C" two years ago (the old-timers here may remember that) I'm faced with constant medical checkups, which require you having that old "inshorunce". Best of luck and blessings to you, however. Remember, when the going gets tough, the tough start pickin'. 399 Tue, Dec 10, 5:24PM EST Skiball Howdie kids! Just thought Id pop in and report Im syill alive! My best to you all. Ill come back soon when I can stay longer. Miss you guys. (and B.B. too of course) 400 Tue, Dec 10, 6:46PM EST old timer To get serious for a moment...I had the chance to try out the new Yamaha Michael Anthony model Bass last night...unbelievable electronics in it . Never seen anything like it... no matter what string you play , no matter where you play on the fretboard...the note comes out as an open E ! Gotta git me one a dem....TFPIC ! 401 Tue, Dec 10, 6:54PM EST old timer Luther , you might understand this , cause the wife dont . I picked up a fretless Corvette Standard 4 , pretty much for a song . For some reason the wife thinks it was stupid ! I told her that for just this one time I would let her ask me any question she wanted and after that to never question me about the bass collection again ! Can you imagine that ? 402 Tue, Dec 10, 7:08PM EST Mr.Bass I have finally done it... I ran out of room! I can not fit one more bass into this house, If I buy one more bass the dog sleeps outside. 403 Tue, Dec 10, 9:00PM EST Bernie B in the P.T. Get an Upright. They used to call them doghouses anyways. NYUCK NYUCK. I think certain high end amps are O.K. and I might take a look see at the SWR Baby Blue, but the upright sounds pretty good run direct through the paracoustic D.I.--thanks for the tip Azbug. Marcus has recently been endorsing EBS stuff which is damned good, but exceptionally expensive. B.B.- thanks for the tips. Now a joke for the real old timers here. My group just got a gig at The Castle Arse. 404 Tue, Dec 10, 10:03PM EST jeremy hello! anyone here have any cruise ship experience? 405 Wed, Dec 11, 10:37AM EST Been There Done That Jeremy...despite what some others have said, a cruise ship gig is a great job, you get paid well, free food all day, get to take the tender in to whatever place you are docked to see the sites during the day. You have to play 4 sets most nights and it isn't that easy a gig to land, you should be able to read and be deversified in many styles. Downside is if you are married its difficult on the home front because you can be away for months at a time, need an understanding spouse. 406 Wed, Dec 11, 5:03PM EST Luther OT...nice aquisition! I'm sure that once she asked the questions, you gave her the same type of response Mr. Corleone gave Mrs. Corleone. Luckily, my wife likes to buy me bass gear for x-mas and my b-day. My spare bedroom isn't quite as full as yours, but it might be in a couple of years. Do me a favor if you would, hold onto the "Spoiler Series" for me. It might be on the "to do" list come summertime. Too bad you won't be skiing at Mt. Snow this weekend. They'll be getting plenty of fresh powder. 407 Wed, Dec 11, 5:16PM EST crimins Ski > good to see you back, man. I'm still working in Lake Mary. I've got about another month to go on this project. 408 Wed, Dec 11, 5:23PM EST lowlifer Talking about snow I hope they get some in the sierras before the 22nd. I'll be boarding then. Got comped 2 nights in Reno 12/22-12/23. 409 Thu, Dec 12, 9:18AM EST crimins Skiball > did you get a chance to check out any of the deals at MARS during their close-out? I picked up a nice rack case wi
