My hankie is getting lots of use lately, just watched Standing in the Shadows of Motown. What a really great movie. Bob Babbitt did a wonderful job covering JJ's parts. Its got me looking for some foam to put under my strings by the bridge.

I know I've been threatening this for some time now but , after I come back from vacation , in a boot(Canadian joke) a month , I'm going to sell most of the collection . I'll list it here first then put it in a local ' want-ad ' . If any of you guys are interested , you get first shot AND of course a better price than anyone else . Maybe I'll even figure out how to send pics by then .

Big G>Foam under the strings by the bridge works great. I used to have an old Epi Batwing bass that had a lever which raised and lowered a foam damper. Works wonders for cleaning up articulation. Eventually, palm or finger muting can work the same effect, though I don't think it works quite as well as the foam. Old Timer> Please learn to send pics. If I hit lotto I'll put in a bid for the whole set.

CK experimented with several types of foam and other materials to get just the right amount of dampening effect. I had a mute on my ebo, but when engaged, it caused all the strings to go sharp,(not to mention the mud just got muddier LOL). Not very good for use on the fly, so I just removed it from the bass.

OT...I'm here...just recovering from minor surgury. As your collection goes on the auction block...is the ONE I'm particularly interested in part of the lot? I played a very nice bass tig over the weekend: a Musicman Stingray through an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro with a 4x10 and a 1x15 cab. It sure moved some air. Both cabs were rated at 4 ohm a piece so you can imagine the juice flowing through the system. Alas...yet another item added to my wish list. The same guy who had the rig let me borrow "Rising Low", a DVD about the making of the Gov't Mule tribute CD. Mike Gordon of Phish made the film. It had some interestng footage, but too much of it was of Mike Gordon and his spacey commentary. Willie Weeks was in it, but he didn't even speak. Too bad, I would have like to hear some words of wisdom from him. Hey OT...is your Dodge out of the garage yet?

Thanks for the link big g. That was a shock. I remember lifting Noels bass lines in numerous Hendrix songs, I wasn't sure if Jimi played some of those or not. But I was really into Hendrix at one point.
Going back many years, one day in music class we were allowed to bring in one album of something we thought was really unique. I chose Noels band Fat Mattress, a song called Magic Forest..it starts with some very strange voices sped up...I will never forget the teachers look as she was wondering what the heck was on her turntable! Noel you will be missed, RIP.

s toll.
33
Thu, May 15, 10:02PM EST
Johnnie A- For something meaningful, listen to what's out there now, and realize the connections. We all have them--especially this room that grew up w/the same batch of role models over a roughly ten year span. I.E.- James Jamerson, J.P.J, and Noel 1969-74.......Stanley Clarke, Bootsy, and Geddy Lee 1979-84. Except for Vic Wooten and Christian Mc Bride in the 90's...there really hasn't been a lot new to write about. Of course spanning that same time frame I do need to add Duck Dunn, Chuck Rainey, and Chris Squire, but the time and style reference points do remani intact. It's time we either contribute to the new bass revolution first hand, or start trainin' the young ones quickly.

Song after song of fingerstyle funk Bass playin' was just way too much fun. This new (to me) Elrick was custom made for the job. There were a couple tunes where I was playin' my proverbial arse off and this Bass was coming back to me sayin' "C'mon, Dude! Is that all you can do?!?!?" *LMAO* Like OT says, patience pays! Imagine the old days of URB's w/gut strings which made a low B-String a physical impossibility w/out a 44" neck scale. Worse yet imagine trying to figure out lines from surface scratchy 78 RPM records? We are truly blessed, and should not engage in the arrogance we so often accuse the other person of displaying.

Bernie B in the P.T.
Bigginer325> Depends on what style you're looking to play. In the meantime start turning on the radio and try to cop licks that way. It's great ear-training and helps explain finger-patterns. Is your drum teacher teaching you to read? This is important, because if so you could become a monster at reading rhythms. Learning to read really does count for something----It nabbed me several studio gigs, and helped pay for college. Tell me the style---I know most of the books----Here's the real deal though---a quote from Chuck "The Rain Man" Rainey, who blessed me w/several lessons over a wonderful 3 month time span in my younger days---"Whatever style your trying to learn--listen to it. Find out which bass player in that style really bends your ear, buy all of his groups albums, then cop his licks. When you're done with him--find another one." Many of you don't know that Chuck learned to read music in a drum and bugle corps at a young age. He swears it helped him develop his style. Not only did he learn to read rhythms---thanks to the drums--but he also learned melodic phrasing and what it looks like on paper---thanks to the trumpet.

Im In sort of a punk/alternitive band but we havnt done much. Our bass player is self taught but is now taking lessons. To be ohnest I really don't know what style I like because i love all music. Im not sure if im that advanced to cop licks on the radio to practice ear-trainings and finger-patterns. I know how to read drum music. My drum teacher has told me I am a good reader.

Bigginer: I'm all for folks learning as many instruments as they can. I still recommend that you take a couple of lessons to learn proper basic technique for playing the bass; Right/Left hand placement, proper way to place/hold it, fingerboard familiarity etc. You can certainly develop your own way of doing things, but it makes it a lot easier to learn the basics first..........Big g; So, how'd the party go? Well folks, in the middle of a recession, (You know, the one that our government swore didn't exist two years ago), it's amazing what $300 can buy. I've been out shopping for a new cheap back-up bass for my Lakland. Let me tell you that there are a lot of good used Yamaha TRB II 5-strings in the $4-500 range, and same goes for the new Ibanez 5 string Q405's or whatever they call them. (Really not bad basses at all for the money.) Here's a real kicker though. I've never been a fan of Washburn basses, because I felt they chintzed out on the pots and pre-amps. It was for these very reasons that Chuck "The Rain Man" Rainey told them no thanks--he did not want a Washburn Signature Line w/his name on it. Turned down a hell of a deal too. None-the-less, Washburn maintains a custom shop where they still build 'em here in the good ol' U.S. of A. w/top notch parts and electronics. To make a long story short I found one of these baby's---Hand built in the U.S. w/swamp ash body and AAAA birds eye maple cap (a thick cap, not one of those little barely covers the top of a cheap wood body deals)over genuine swamp ash. The Bartolini pickups are those huge honkin' humbuckers you used to have to order from Bill Bartolini himself, not the mass produced MK I's showing up on all the imports. Has a beautiful rock maple neck, and a very heavy quasi-Bad-Ass bridge. The starving guitar shop had an exceptionally reasonable $500.00 asking price. I asked the guy to help me make it grow legs so we could get it out of his store and into my hot little hands. He came back w/a ridiculously low $325.00. Of course I couldn't resist asking him if that was really as low as he could go, or how about a free case, and he just stared back at me w/the unbelieveably blank look that told me I'd better just shut up and pay up -which I did. I have since learned that these list at $1900.00 new w/a street price of $1300.00. I think my back up bass may become the first line. Took it home, plugged it into the Roland DB 700 and knocked a wall over w/it. (LOL) Oh well---time to remodel anyways.

Bernie...that's one heck of a score. I would like to see some pics of it as well. It sounds almost too good to be true, LOL. Hey OT...what about the Series-1 Alembic or the Spector 5-string? For anyone interested, I've seen OT's collection and they're all in great shape and well maintained. You certainly won't go wrong with one of his basses. If I had more $$$, I'd grab a few of them right now.

Yo', Dudes! How goes it? Speaking of URB's... I just did something I had yet to do, I traded my Lakland for an URB. This one is a players bass and I won't have any issues hauling it around to gigs. The guy doesn't know all that much about URB's but he's had it to 2 separate luthiers who both agreed it's a 70-80 year old German laminate. He's also giving me a 62 Reissue USA Strat in the deal. So much for my escapades. How's everybody else doing?

Big G> Happy B-Day dude! It's a shame that I haven't had a chance to post this earlier. Gigs are lining up, but not quite as quickly as I'd like. I hate one nighters. Set up, play, break down, go home. I sure miss house band gigs. Big G--Mono-rail bridges are a great concept. I think they kick the $#!+ out of the old barel type Fender bridges, but they don't really have much of a jump on the massive hunks of brass put out by Bad-ass or Wilkenson. They're really a beautiful concept, and I believe if they were put together better than the ones I've played (Ibanez) they might actually exceed these. It's a strange sort of thing -like wooden nuts. If you know an EXCELLENT (can't emphasize excellent enough)luthier, a wooden nut cut just so can bring a bass to life. If not cut perfectly, however, they will kill a basses' tone just as quickly. It's no wonder most techs (usually not luthiers) will put a brass nut on your bass in order to increase sustain. I know because I've had it done. Use Ebony or Rosewood only. I think that at the other end of the string the mono rail bridges are a great idea, but as it stands now, as with the nut, a huge honkin' hunk'o'brass with adjustable saddles of the same huge honkin' variety can do the job just as well---especially if set up to run string through body. Just my opinion based on my own experiences.

Wow...its been a long time since I was here. I've got a question for all you gearheads: I've just spent this year paring down the rig, from a rib-crushing, 6' monster, to a backseat friendly Bassman 100. I've got 4 basses, A Fender Am. Deluxe V (with an 18v preamp), an Fender Mexi 60's Reissue Jazz, a Fender Am. Series fretless, and a homemade job, made from Warmoth parts, and EMG loaded. I'm running a tube preamp into my input of the bassman, to add some tube warmth. I'm also thinking of a Bass Pod, simply because I could set uo 1 or 2 channels for each bass, and set up all the levels to be equal. This way my passive basses will be just as loud as my active ones.
My question is this, am I going to be "over-preamping"? I was planning to use the effects loop for the pod, but that still means 2 or even 3 preamps in the chain before the amp stage! I'm awarw that I'll have to keep a close eye on my gain structure, but is there such a thing as overdoing it? Am I going to sound like I'm playing next to Niagra Falls?? Opinions? Thoughts??

Happy Belated B'Day, g! Sorry, so late to post that! Mine was a couple weeks ago (41 and not counting anymore). :-)..... Bernie: Times are tough, all over. I had a steady, Wed. Thur. Fri. afternoon gig cancelled thru' September. It was that R&B gig I mentioned a few posts earlier. It was a sweet gig and about the only kinda "Kook" gig I'd keep at as a steady. 3 days a week, noon 'til 4p.m. The house had a rig for me to use. 2 bills for W/Th, and 2 1/2 for Fri. All I had to do was show up with a Bass. That was a killer phone call cancelling that gig!... Oh well. Just gotta keep plugging along..... Hazzard: I have run my POD into my Sansamp DI and out to the board. Never have doubled up a pre signal going to an amp. I imagine it is done, but it sure does seem like you'd REALLY haveta watch the switches and knobs to keep from over driving the front end of your amp? I'd be interested to hear how it works out...
132
Thu, Jul 10, 7:57PM EST
Hazzard
OK...heres a thought then, by sending a tube signal into a POD, is that defeating the whole idea? Would it be better to go into the od first, THEN tube DI?
133
Thu, Jul 10, 9:41PM EST
AzBug
Definitely, the POD first. If I'm right, I believe the POD does digital emulation? AN A/D - D/A type thing. The rack mount POD Pro has a digital out, so you would definitely lose tube affect on your signal chain if you were using that O/P. As I said in my previous post, I run from my POD into my pre/DI. Try both config's and see which one you like.

Hello guys. Well, I hate to be on a downer, but as most of you old-timers know. I've been battling the big "C" over the past three years. We still have to come up with the cover artwork, but we'll jump on that pretty soon. The name of the group will be Acoustic Collective, even though I used electric basses on it. Got a question. I am a newbee on the bass (a year). Is there software that will break out the different instruments (bass, lead guitar, rythem guitar, drums, etc.) from the music on the CD? I know they record them separately and mix them, so I figure there must be a way to "un-mix" it. I have heard that cakewalk makes alot of music software, but I don't know very much about it. It sounds like a great idea, and I trust my guitar player's instincts. (Very rare indeed since I rarely trust any guitar player.) Stinky> the Korg Pandora series of effects boxes have a feature that will remove the bass from a track bu reverse phasing. There are other gizmos out there that will do the same for vocals. They onlyreally work well if the bass or vocal track is mixed dead center. By the way, in one of my jazz mags a saw an add for a Yamaha version of the Pandora PXB3 for horn players - same box, buttons, dials, etc. Just withe Yamaha logo on it. Show review: HOT 106 degrees. Opening act was MoFro from Florida.
They played about 30 minutes in the direct sun. It took 2 songs before they brought up the keyboards in the mix. Bass drum mixed way too loud. Bassist, from France, played a Jazz bass with the covers on through an SVT (house amp). He was actually very good when I could here him. Next band was Galactica. These guys really cooked. Wild man on drums, but very solid. Their music is a cross between funk and jazz. Killer tenor/bari sax man who ran through a barrage of pedals. I highly recommend checking them out. The bassist held the groove together on an old sunburst P. Not too flashy, but with their drummer, he had to hold the line pretty much. Next up, the man, Jeff Beck. I was disappointed that he had Tony Hymas on keys playing the bass parts. booo. While Hymas handed the job professionally, I still missed the bass. Jeff was on top of his game.
Oh did I mention the drummer? Terry Bozio. OMG as usual the guy was an animal and probably watching him was worth the price of tickets. His set now includes 4 bass drums, 20 toms, some tuned to specific notes so he could play a melody with Jeff on one song. This was the same lineup as when I saw him with Stevie Ray. BB...well its BB King. Alway great and his bassist played through a Hartke amp and sounded awesome. All in all it was a good show that could have been better if it were 20 degrees cooler.

To stimulate some action here. How about we continue the TBL thread on firsts? My first bass, Mosrite, got stolen. First bass line learned, Peter Gunn or maybe My Girl. First Concert, I believe was Chuck Berry at a Big Daddy Tom Donahue concert at the Cow Palace He had just gotten out of jail after being incarcerated for violating the Mann Act. He was duckwalking across the stage and tripped on a cord. He never missed a beat, jumped up an continued. When he duckwalked back over the cord a second time, he stuck out his tongue at it. FOTFL I'm thinking it was around 1962. First Bass Amp, Fender Showman. Most mismatched booking at a concert, Opening act Golden Earring, got one encore, next, Robin Trower's first winterland appearance, he got 2 encores and Bill Graham had to come out after and keep the show moving because the crowd wanted more. This proved to be very unpopular decision to say the least. The top billing, Sha Na Na who was booed off stage after 4 songs

OK, my turn: First bass - Gibson EB0, although I played a friend's Kent bass before that. First bass amp - Fender Dual Showman, blonde. Wish I still had that! First concert - hard to say, but I think it was the Stones along with the Righteous Brothers, Sir Douglas Quintet, the Newbeats in 1965. It was one of those radio station package shows. First bass line learned of any significance (other than Louie, Louie) would have to be "Time Won't Let Me" by the Outsiders. Either that, or We Gotta Get OUt of This Place by the Animals.

First Bass- Hagstrom eight w/only 4 strings. Wish I still had that tobacco sunburst beauty. Super fast neck. First Amp- Fender Tremolux (wished I still had that one too.) It sounded way cool when I had all 8 strings on the Hag and ran the Tremolo at full speed and intensity. Sounded even cooler when we sent it through a Leslie. First Bass Line- "Hey Joe"/ Noel Redding for Jimi Hendrix. First Gig- Some apartment clubhouse...we played for tips, and I still remember that funky ol' brown and green Shag Carpet. 1st Concert- Playing for one of a million bands at the time named "Pegasus." It was in a public park in Dallas called Lee Park. (As in Robert E. Lee) It was sort of a mini-woodstock affair w/tons of local bands. Some even went on to bigger and better things. The concert was actually a protest put together by a bunch of us old hippies. It was given on the anniversary of the "Lee Park Massacre." We used to all hang out there and play Frisbee, etc., and the locals got pissed. They sent the cops in one day, and they ran through busting heads left and right. One year later we were back in force. Those were different times for sure. mpraven>Surely you know those times well having played for Phil Woods. I didn't get up to Boston till 1984--back to Texas by 1992. Bet you wished you still had that Magnatone. I thought their basses and guitars were very under rated. Very Vox-like. Funny now that their amps are considered Holy Grail material by guitarists.

First bass: A imitation Hofner Beatle bass at 15 or so around 1970.
A pencil thin neck, you could play without stretching. Fist teacher had a Fender Precision with a wide neck I thought I could never play
on. Few months later got a mint, sunburst Fender Precision that some guy kept under his bed, in the case. Had black nylon strings on it. Wish I still had that bass-have no idea where it even ended up. First song: White Room by Cream. Living in a small town in Canada,
(THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO) musicianship was VERY competitive. Hands down
it was the best way to get girls. Paul Schaffer (sp) of NBC D. Letterman, was in one of the high school, battle of the bands. Neil Young would sing about Thunder Bay in his CSN&Y song, "Helpless."
Point being-learning bass was rough in those days. Guys wouldn't share ideas. Teaching material was limited. I had a cellist/bassist
teacher. Learning Jim Fielder lines off of BS&T records-lots of ear training but frustrating. First gig-with the Ernie Castle V-which was
way beyond my ability and learning. So angry-never wanted to keep up with the lessons. The string bass in the high school band was played by some girl with horrible acne. Forget this road of endeavor.
After working in film production and traveling for 15 years ended up in Los Angeles-where Stevie Ray Vaughn type guitarist introduced me to
walking bass lines of Tommy Shannon of SRV's Double Trouble with Hal Leonard bass book. Studied every bass book, I could find-now that teaching material had made such great leaps. Drum machines and workng metronomes, good tablature-well written bass clef sight reading books-
jam tapes like "Looking For A Bass Player", where the lines for Crossroads and Layla etc were isolated and on the other side of the tape-the full mix minus the bass so you could drop in your own lines.
First audience. Playing at a jam night-my knees were shaking. After owning and selliing about 15 basses (one was a double neck 8 string)
kept playing with different LA Bands and studying. Keeping a day job-
practicing at night-no social life-just practicing and finally gigging in LA clubs. So wiped out some nights-I would forget my bass at the nightclub and the drummer would snatch it and return to me. Made notes on every gig-the more pressure the better-palying in front of people made all the difference. (so many Los Angles guys play to no one except their bedroom walls or their computer) -kept studying
from massive teachng library of video tape/CD/audio tape/and later MP3's, while gigging, learning songs on the fly. First Paycheck; First applause; after a First bass solo--> making up for all the botched experiences of my youth, although I still do the "Hendrix/Clapton machine gun triplet" I learned at 15 but now in my 40's I can do it, a thousand different ways.
We didn't have Victor Wooten in 1970 and Charlie Mingus was out of reach. What a pleasure to have all that and more-for inspiration; now. (Have about 50 items on Amazon.com wish list.) Victor Wooten's harmonics on live, "Amazing Grace" or just the way he plucks a single note. Live CD's with matching DVD's so you know the guy didn't create
the bass line in the studio after the 30th take. (or the 2nd!)
Keep on playing. Play with feeling.

Pretty Interesting "Firsts"!
Makes you think how far we've really come! Oscar Pettiford to Stanley Clarke. Joe Osborne and Carol Kaye to Stu Hamm and Victor Wooten. Also nice to hear Jim Fielder's name mentioned. He got lost in the sauce after all these years.

Mpraven-you could HEAR the basslines on those BS&T early LP's as Jim
was taking an active part in the arrangements. (then there was the Blues Pt 2, bass solo- on BS&T 2!!!)I liked solos on the Jazz 4 sections of God Bless the Child, Spinning Wheel, Lucrita McEvil. The songs were alsways extended on the LP's which was nice. Thanks for shout out. Picked up a Hal Leonard book of BS&T arrangements with good bass, synth and horn sections awhile back-and you can see how active Fielder was in the Melody Dept., on Fender Bass with songs like "When I Die, or "Sometimes In Winter" (Steve Katz) I really enjoyed reading other bassist "FIRSTS" on the site which compelled me to write and post. Leave it to Big G to "stimulate some action." Thanks for the
"nod", mpraven, all the best.

Dales jam was outstanding. He tried to surprise everyone and got married at the jam. Very cool ceremony. Bride, Groom, and Pastor really yucked it up.
Every year I get floored by the kids. TJ's drumming has matured. He played with great taste. Jake, played Teentown on a jazz fretless. This year a young songwriter showed up and did several originals. I predict this kid, Dennis Hazelton, has a very bright future. When I arrived on Saturday, first thing noticed was that there were 2 sets of congas on the stage. One set was enough, so I had to dissapoint one fellow, but told him he could sit in on the other congas. We needed the stage space. I avoided the Kamakazi's. A good time was had by all.

Wow! Great read, your fellas' experiences. Quite a bit of history right in these last few posts. Thanks for sharing! I came along a couple years after you guys; My first bass was a 1/2 size EKO Jazz Bass knock off. Had that for 2 years, then saved up enough paper route money to buy my Rick 4001 and a SUNN Beta Bass 1x15 Combo. My nephew now has the amp and it still sounds great! First concert: I remember it like it was yesterday...well, okay, more like last week *LOL*; September 5th, 1975 San Bernardino, Ca. ; Brownsville Station opened, then Peter Frampton (2 weeks later, Frampton Comes Alive was recorded up north), then came Lynyrd Skynyrd (before the fateful plane crash) and headlining was Black Sabbath (with Ozzy). I was 14 and my mom would only let me go with my older sister as chaperone.... Memorable experiences: 2 1/2 hour rhythm section workshop after a High School Jazz Festival with Buddy Rich (he judged the rhythm sections). The guy could do more with a hi-hat stand than most drummers can do with an entire kit! Sitting in (still in High School) with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at a school assembly performance. Jamming with Stanley Jordan after the MusArts Jazz Fest, in Flagstaff, Az. He was one of the headliners and my band had played earlier in the day. Big Jam after the show. What would life be like without music? I can't, or don't want to even try and imagine...

I agree. I ponder the thought of the "up and coming" bassist of the future. Being an avid fan of the bass, I have listened to the best and I'm hearing some new cats on the scene who will be added to the list. I can still hear jaco and the way he communicated with the bass. The bass family has great members (some greater than others, but only by opinion) Les Claypool has a way of making you want to pick up the bass yourself and take a spin. Bootsy Collins: Funk, pure FUNK! Jaco? What can one say about Jaco? Stanley Clarke: The man has taken the "bassist" to higher levels of entertainment. Paul McCartney: Fab!Christian McBride, awesome! There is a new cat on the scene that I ran across accidentally. While being "stuck" with the dubious job of taking my teenaged daughter to see teen sensation Christina Aguilera, I heard the funkiest bass I've heard in years. Being with a reporter from the Boston Globe, we were able to go backstage. I met this guy, his name is Ethan Farmer and man was I surprised! Very humble, took compliments well, and if you haven't had the chance to hear him, don't worry, you can. He shared a little with me and through the power of the internet, I found many of the projects he has worked on. He's worked with Dave Koz Tom Middleton, he's even done some writing. Hey, I just hope that he may get the opportunity to read this posting and know he has a great future ahead of him. If you guys get the chance to get out and hear him, do it! It's worth it.

First Bass was a Sekova Beatle Bass copy, I broke the nut and used a short pencil in its place, the action had to be about an inch off of the neck! Second bass was same as Bernies, The Hagstrom eight string bass ,wafer neck. I still have that one! Except a relative of mine took a disc sander to the back of it because I wanted to change the color...ouch!

THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! ITWORKS!!! BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW
IT TO THE LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!! A little while back, I was browsing
through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article
similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within
weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought,' Yeah,
right, this must be a scam', but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept
reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and
address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address
in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200
newsgroups (There are thousands). No catch, that was it. So after
thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I decided to try it. I
figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right? Like
most of us, I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the
legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office
(1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I
invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started
getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but
the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By
the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the
third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my
fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's
still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps. Let me
tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works.... also,
make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the
information off of it as you need it. STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper
and write the following on each piece of paper PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR
MAILING LIST.' Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the
6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope.
This is to prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in each of the 6
envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a
piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a
$1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service by this. THIS IS
ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1)Carroll 103 Kings highway East, Haddonfield, NJ 08033 #2)David 28 E.
Natoma Ave. Addison, IL 60101P. #3)R. Wheeler 333 W. Beloit Salina,KS
67401 #4) Leetia 2313 Capeland Dr. Little Elm, Tx 75068#5)C. Gould 275
Lake st. Apt 6 Weymouth Ma.02189 #6) C.MAZZOLA 922 KEYSTONE DR.
STOUDSBURG, PA 18360. STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see
above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and
add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need
to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now,
post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there
are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, them more
you post, the more money you make! ---DIRECTIONS -----HOW TO POST TO
NEWSGROUPS------------ Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire
letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of
this letter, then click and drag your cursor to the bottom of this
document. Select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter
into the computers memory. Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and
place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select
'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you
can add your name to the list. Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a
.txt file. If you want to do your postings in different sittings,
you'll always have this file to go back to. Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet
explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums,
message boards, chat sites, discussions.) Step 5) Visit these message
boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of
this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject,
this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the
list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button.
You're done with your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you
have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get
the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin
reciving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to
rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you
wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the
postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE
CORRECT.** Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies
(a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the
letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM
200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to
each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each
make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I
will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around
and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies
each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the fun part,
each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2
and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!!
Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with
my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will
receive $15,625.00! With a original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING!
When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting
in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list,
putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to
remember is, do you realize that thousands of people all over the world
are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday, JUST LIKE
YOU are now!! So can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I
think so... People have said, 'what if the plan is played out and no one
sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening
when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are
joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a
try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with
thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and
HONESTLY and this will work. Enjoy the money, Phil

Has anyone tried the GK Backline 210 BLX cabinet, or the 115 BLX? Would it be good (at least, okay) with the GK 800 RB Head compared to the RBS?

Bernie B in the P.T.
Nuclear Weasel> I cannot give a definitive answer, but I believe this will help. I'm certain that there are GK fans on this site who can fill you in on the finer details.----Seems to me that the Backline Series is to GK what the Working Man Series is to SWR. I personally wouldn't want to cheat a top shelf head out of its optimal sound by mating it to a lower line set of speakers. GK heads have a tendency to sound harsher than most when mismatched w/speakers. For the money I'd rather buy a used cab w/top shelf speakers than a new cab of mediocre quality. Speakers are too much of an important factor in the overall signal chain. If you skimp here you will regret it.

I second what Bernie B said. I own a GK 2000RB and I can assure you that it sounds a heck of a lot better through a quality cabinet. Some guys still prefer the Hartke 4x10 sound with the GK, but I've had better luck with SWR Goliath cabs or Bag End cabs. Don't skimp on the gear. You defintely get what you pay for in that dept. Good luck in finding something that suits yor tastes and your wallet, Nuclear Weasel.

Thanks for the advice! But that leads me to another question: if I were to get more expensive speakers, I could probably only afford either the 210 or the 115, not both yet. Which would I better off with alone with the 800rb? Would either be loud enough on their own for small or medium shows?
198
Sat, Aug 30, 10:05PM EST
Bernie B in the P.T.
Depends a lot on your sound. I personally prefer the old school meat and potatoes sound. Emphasis a little on the lower end w/midrange and highs used to accent the sound. Old school fingers--no pick--no slap. That's why I would go w/the 1X15. But if you prefer a sound where the midrange is the tonal center, and glassy horn highs are important too---then you should go w/the 2X10. If you slap at all you will definitely want the 2X10. Whichever you go with, you will eventually want to add the other later on. 1x15 w/a 2X10 is a very versatile set up.

levite...I was wondering who the Carvin proponent was on this site. It's been so long since I've seen who it was that I forgot. A while back I picked up a slightly used Carvin LB76 for a great price ($400) and much to my surprize, it was a fine bass for a very fine price. I may have posted something to that regard hoping to get some feedback from you or the other pro-Carvin folks, but never heard back. Any thoughts on that line? It's a great piece of equipment...mohogany, neck-thru...ebony finger board...J-99's...it's a nice addition to the family. Like you, I'm using Ampeg gear these days as well. I've been running an SVT-4 Pro through (2) 410 HLF Cassic Series Cabs. It's got snot for sure and I got a great deal on it as well. Defiinitely a Willie Weeks vibe. Also, I've been looking at getting a Musicman Sting Ray-5 with the piezo pick-up. Does anyone here have any experience with that bass with the piezo? I can get a new one for a fantastic price and I'm on the fence (mainly because OT has some REALLY nice stuff for sale that would be roughly around the same cost...and he's only a couple of hours away...I seem to recall an Alembic Series-I with the Omega cut out...). The SansAmp Bass Driver DI manual has a blurb about how it's especially piezo pick-up friendly. Anyone have any info on this?

Luther- Sans Amp Bass Driver is very Piezo Friendly. I prefer the LR Baggs Paracoustic when running straight Piezo on Upright, but the Sans Amp is an electric bass' best friend. Levite- if your still out here in the DFW area let me know. We're still supposed to get together for a cup'o'coffee or something. Congrats to all you well married folks. It took the second time around for me, but they've been five of the best years of my life. The Washburn Bantam 925 has replaced the Lakland as my first string bass. I find this odd as I usually despise Washburn basses, but these 925's are hot. I think those honkin' huge Bartolini's just get a ridiculously nice tone. Surprisingly the low B is a nice sounding string even though it's only a 34" scale. Still love my Roland DB-700 amp. I still can't figure out why they never caught on, but what the hell-works for me. If you can find one of these for the same dirt cheap $699 I paid for mine I urge you to try it.

the Carvin speakers is what I am so onboard with...I love them...I dont care for their head...I use mostly a Fender 400 bass head...or in the studio...Its always through the SVT III then straight to the board...

I was just curious to why you all picked the bass as your main instrument? For me, it was my brothers friend the day after The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. Mr. Bass- I got interested in the bass at an earlier age than many, as can be seen by my knowledge of older keyboards. (Seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan was a starting point. A few years later the theme song to "Hair" was all over the radio at that time, and that was a pretty hot bass line. I could not shake that sound out of my head, but my parents were tired of paying for piano lessons for my sisters etc. who never really wanted to learn piano in the first place. If I wanted to learn music--- I was on my own. I did not finally act upon the bass till I had finished scrimping and saving my school lunch money. W/that I bought the infamous Hagstrom 8-string from Pete's Pawn Shop. Cost- $150.00.- Later on, I found an add for the Fender Tremolux amp in the local paper. Cost--$125.00.-- From there came several decades of intense practice and lots of fun. The Cost-Priceless.

Bernie > You're right about the Vox. I always thought Alan Price of the Animals made that thing sound pretty cool. However, the Farfisa's were used on a lot of the big bubble gum hits of the '60s - Double Shot (Swinging Medallions), 96 Tears (? and the Mysterians), etc. I always thought the Farfisa's sounded like crap. But then when I first heard Steve Winwood on "Gimme Some Lovin'", that did it, man. The Hammond B3 was IT as far as organs were concerned and everything else paled in comparison.

I have a true story about ? and the Mysterians. In the laste '60s, my band opened for them at a couple of gigs here in north Florida. I think they were originally from the Detroit area and were of Hispanic descent. They didn't have any roadies, so the band members, with the exception of "?" of course, set up their equipment. The organ player was a little short guy, and he had a mic and stand in his hand up on the stage. "?" was standing nearby with his sunglasses on watching his guys set up, so the little keyboard guy says "Hey, Question, where do you want the microphone"? Now you would have thought that these guys being on the road together and having a hit record would at least call refer to each other by their real names (never did know what "?'s" real name was, but I guess that was part of the mystique). I thought it qas quite funny that they called him "Question".

Second ? and the Mysterians story (true). On the second gig we did with them about a year later, they had a different drummer. All I can remember about him was that they set this huge truck tire and rim in front of the kick drum to keep it from sliding on the stage. Plus the guy had a huge pot belly, wearing only a vest and no shirt. And again, Question Mark did not do any equipment setup, but just stood cooly by with his sunglasses on. Ture story - in Palatka, Florida.

Continuing old band stories
Back in
65 I decided I needed some bass lessons and checked into the store were I had bought my
64 St. George (a P bass Japanese clone). After about nine months with Klouse Paulski, he had mentioned a studio job he had finished that past weekend with a local singer by the name of Sonny Geraci. He told me they had brought in string and horn players from the Cleveland Symphony, a keyboard player and a lead guitar player and knocked out this tune called
Time Won
t Let Me
. He showed me the bass part and he played the chords. I guess early in
66 the tune was released. About a year later, our guitar player was called up through the draft to work for Uncle Sam, so we were looking for a replacement. We auditioned this player who asked if we knew
Time Won
t Let Me
. We said sure, who doesn
t cover that tune and we proceeded to knock it out. When we got to the lead guitar part we all dropped our jaws cause it was perfect to the note. A few minutes later we found out we were auditioning Al Austin who did the original lead guitar the

There was also a band traveling around the southeast booked by an unscrupulous promoter billed as the Zombies at that time as well, but I knew some of them, and they were just good-ole westside Jacksonville boys, who put on fake British accents when they played these small, unknowing Florida and Georgia towns. ? and the Mysterians were the real thing however. The one brush I had with a fading rock star had to be this burnt out cat we met while auditioning keyboard players during my glam rock years. (Anyone remember Kansas). Our band did a bunch of Kansas, Styx, etc. at the time. While auditioning keyboardists we had a guy show up whose brain cells were definitely post toasties, but he still kept decent time and played fairly well. There was a little bit left under all the rust. Claimed he used to play for The Lovin' Spoonful." Turned out he did, but only as a summer tour keyboardist. This guy still had an old Mellotron and Vox Jaguar stashed away in his apartment. Along w/the B-3 he hauled out for the audition. A shame he didn't have a mini-moog and some of that other fancy crap we needed back then in the glam years.

On the thread of "fake" '60s bands, that same unscrupulous promoter wanted my band to go out as "The Buchanan Brothers" about that same time period. I remember they were "one-hit wonders" but don't remember the name of the hit. I politely refused his request to go out faking it as a natiaonally known act in small towns where no one would know the difference.

coincidence or planned obsolesence? While unloading my 2-10 cab after church on Saturday I noticed that one of the speaker wires was visible in the port. After opening up the cab I discovered one of the tabs on the back of speaker was torn completely off. Fortunately the speaker has two tabs for each side so I reattached it to the remaining tab. Then when I checked it out only the fixed tab speaker worked?? I checked the other speaker and the clip of the other speaker was broken off completely on the wire! I for the life of me can't figure out why both would give up at the same time. Paul, my rig is working fine now and my bags are packed, give me a call. I'm waiting by my phone.

On another note; Have any of you guys seen the Tommy Dowd documentary yet? It's been playing on the Sundance (Independent Film stuff) Network. It's called 'Tom Dowd: The Language Of Music'. What a great show! A whole ton of history not only on Tom himself, but on the advent of stereo and multi-track recording. They even show recent footage of Les Paul in his original multi-track studio. I had NO idea Les Paul was the father of multi-track recording! There's also some reaffirmation on the plain ol' truth; Bass MAKES a song what it is! These guys say so...I'm with 'em. :-) There's a bunch of historical stuff on Dowd as engineer and producer for most of the Southern Fried Rock bands; Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, The Allman Bro's, etc. He was also the engineer on Clapton's "Layla" album. Cool little history on how Allman ended up playing on that track. Knowing most of you guys I think you'd enjoy it. Catch it if you can. Peace!

Archer: That's about the best way I have ever heard of doing it. I'm interested in how you run your signal chain? How do you send the effected signal to one cab and a clean signal to the other? I rarely run 2 cabs, but when I do they are pretty much daisy chained with the same signal. I have all but given up on effects. I use a little chorus for fretless(sometimes), but I have found the only way to get it to cut through the mix is with volume. Lately, I just use a little bit of reverb, if anything at all..... Hey! Regarding effects, I have a small pedal board with an in-line tuner, phase shifter, ocaver, MuTron 3 and a SansAmp Bass Driver DI. The SansAmp gets the most use, the and octave pedal are used mainly for playing "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel (coincidentally with respect to the Tony Levin mention in the post above). The Mutron is for the occasional Bootsy riff and Grateful Dead tune. The tuner is nice to keep it quiet on-stage both for the instrument change with the line interuption and for tuning. All if them were x-mas presents from my wife over the years. Amazing woman. She threatening to get me a Musicman 5-string this year. I guess I wasn't naughty this year, LOL. I'm also very intrigued by Archer's configuration. It sound great. How's it run? RE: the King Crimson comment: I imagine Trey Gunn is with them. I met him after a Project Two show in Albany, NY a while ago. Really nice guy. Belew was on v-drums for that gig. What a great rhythm section. Fripp was aloof, of course, but he played great. I have a bootleg of the show if any of your are interested. Somebody here lives near Jimmy Smith in CA. It's either big g or someone else. I seem to remember comments about seeing him at jams every now and then. I just got a copy of "dot com blues" or something like that. He's got a great band with him and plenty of guest spots from Dr. John and Etta James. Reggie McBride is on bass. Great record. Anyone else here familiar with it?

I have mixed feelings about the Boss though, getting allot of unwanted cipping in the preamp stage with different basses and after swapping out the unit.I still cannot use the pre amp modeling, erk. He had originally asked me to play bass on his "Chariot" project button but then decided to go with Timmy Lindsay button , but he and Timmy didn't share the same vision for the project, so now I'm back in. I pays to not burn bridges, right? Anyway, I have about a month and a half to learn the tunes for the project before we go to Belmont University in Nashville the last week of December to record at their teaching studio, which is supposed to be state-of-the-art. Hey, it's good to have a project to work on, although I don't consider myself a Southern Rocker, and am certainly not part of the Southern Rock royalty here in Jacksonville (Skynyrd, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, early Allmans, etc.), I'm glad to be thought of to be included since I've certainly paid my dues here in Jax over the last 35+ years. BTW - I'm still dealing with the big "C" and still going through chemo. But as I say, I'm still eatin', workin' sleepin', and most importantly - "PICKIN'". I sure appreciate you guys support.

Can any of you guys point me to someone who might have an ABG tailpiece trapeze? I'm putting together a Frankenstein ABG and all I need now is a tailpiece and a bridge. If I can't find one I may try a fender type, but I worried about the top flexing with all the string pull. Any ideas? TIA

Az, sounds good I agree with Big G above. I'll add my 2 cents and please disregard without much concern but,, I hear allot of vocal and bass with some neat stuff going on at times and often in the background. I might bring some other instruments to the forground to be as strong as the two mentioned. Anyway it's good stuff and you should be happy.

Coolness. Thanks for the comments and recommends fella's. I had a lot of fun doing these recordings. I learned a whole ton of stuff in the studio when doing the ARP stuff. I wish I could go back and remix some the stuff, but I was just the bass player! *LOL*............. g: Something you might try, as afr as getting ahold of a usable tailpiece is to call Steve Azola. He is quite a vintage collector and would probably be able to steer you to a suitable piece. Another advantage with Steve is, he's a master luthier and could probably build you something to order. I gotta warn ya', if you call him make sure to do it when you have some time on your hands. Get him on the 'Vintage Piece Parts' topic and he'll talk your ear off!*LOL*

Az> thanks for the recomendation. I found one for $10 from one of my parts wanted ads. Love the net. My neck arrives today, I'm keeping my fingers crossed its decent. All I need now is some small springs for my pickup adjustment. I made my pickup adjustment bracket from some old scrap L brackets I found. At this point I'm going to install the pickup without controls just to see if it works and how it sounds. I will post a picture of this mutt once I get it completed. On another front, I just joined a country band last night.
The leader, is a song writer and has very good stage presence. Their drummer is supposed to be great, I'm looking forward to practicing with him Saturday.

efcleff>Welcome aboard! All>> My neck arrived. It is exactly as described. I'm pretty sure its not a genuine Fender Jazz neck even though thats what the decals says LOL (yes, the seller did disclose this). It has jazz dimensions. Skunk stripe on the back and truss rod adjustment at the headstock which is functional. All in all I think I scored. If my franken bass doesn't pan out I can always use it on another body.

The country band didn't work out. The leader changed his mind about me playing their upcoming gig, but if I wanted to stay on an work with him in the future......I knew there was a problem when his wife asked him to replay one of the songs I was still learning, without the bass and rhythm guitar. Their great drummer didn't show because he is mending from a beating he took a few days ago "trying to break up a fight in a bar". When I'm told one thing on wednesday and another on saturday its time to cut my losses and move on. What really stood my hair up is the fact that they are going to play the gig without a bassist, just shows how much respect we get. The fellow who suggested I give this band a try said the "lifelong friend" rhythm player, should be the one walking. Oh well, more time for the Voxder bass project. :o)

The frankenbass (voxder) is getting closer to completion. Just a few more small parts are needed. I widened the neck pocket today and fit the neck. As soon as I craft a 1/2" spacer block to match the neck butt, I can mount the neck/ install the electronics, and string it up!

Archer> Glucosamine/Chrondroitin has been working for my old body joints. It takes about 30 days before it really starts to kick in but joint pain has been subsiding. One of our regulars, I think OT or Mr.Bass gave me this>> Find a long even flat plane such as table or counter top. Lay your left arm down so that the forearm---and most definitely the palm of your hand are flat against the surface. Relax your arm as much as possible. Now with the right hand gently grab your LEFT thumb and SLOWLY pull it backwards away from the surface. Bend it back until you feel it fully stretched out. If you have crossed a threshold of pain you have just gone TOO FAR. RELEASE IMMEDIATELY and begin again. At the point that it is fully stretched---BUT NOT PAINFUL---you will stop and count for 5 seconds. Then you will release it and let it relax. Next to the pointer finger. Same steps. After releasing and relaxing it you do the Middle Finger Next. Then Third Finger and then Pinky. Now repeat the Thumb. Now pull back Pointer and Middle Finger Simultaneously. Now Third Finger and Pinky Simultaneously. Now repeat the Thumb again. Now Pull back all Four fingers simultaneously. Remember to ALWAYS let the finger(s) you have just released return to the surface before moving on to the next one, and to make sure that the forearm and palm remain FLAT AGAINST THE SURFACE. Work your time up SLOWLY. Five seconds is an excellent starting point. Do not rush. I can do them for 30 second intervals, but it took me three years to get here. DO NOT RUSH AHEAD. Two seconds a week is a fairly aggressive pace. Remember----PAIN IS NO GAIN---RELAX. You are bending your tendons backwards. They are not used to this. Eventually they will be so flexible that the constant curling in one direction will be of little consequence. Please try and post your results. I will be most interested to see if I have been able to help someone else as much as this has helped me.

Voxder update. I found threaded inserts at the Jackson True Value. $.56 ea. My local cabinet maker donated a very resonant piece of alder for the neck spacer block. It should work well with the maple neck. I think I now have all parts needed to complete the voxder. It was very unnerving to drill the neck for the inserts. It really needed to be done on a drillpress. It came out ok, at least I didnt drill through to the fretboard. :0) I will probably bolt the neck on this weekend. Once I get it playable, I will mount the pickup assembly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the neck joint will be strong enough. I'm gaining a lot respect for the quality luthiers out there. Its so easy to fubar the thing and have junk in one quick instant.

I'm trying to decide between a fender jazz bass and a precision bass. I play fast punk with a pick. I want tone, not too smooth, but not all tinny and empty sounding like punk bass often is. Someguy> I personally like the Jazz bass only because of the thinner neck up near the nut. I can get around on it faster than a Precision. If you are doing more of a riff like Punk and have some fast lines I say the Jazz is the way to go..I also like Carvin basses for the clarity. Good luck, and try as many as you can is great advice.

Loverboy bass player swept overboard, missing
December 2, 2000
Web posted at: 2:09 AM EST (0709 GMT)
SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- The bass guitar player of 1980s pop band, Loverboy, was missing at sea after being swept overboard by a 25-foot (7.5-meter) wave, the performer's management company said.
Scott Smith, 45, of Vancouver, British Columbia, was tossed overboard the Sea Major, his 37-foot (11-meter) sailboat. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon about four miles (six kilometers) off San Francisco's Ocean Beach, a release from manager Lou Blair said.
Two travel companions, who have not been named, were below deck when the wave struck the boat. They were not injured.
The wave's force was so strong it broke off the boat's steering wheel, the release said.
The U.S. Coast Guard searched for Smith -- who was not
